So, Superman is less cool than Batman cuz Batman is more vulnerable and darker among other things. Nightwing is more relatable than Batman, plus he's younger and youth sells. I've often wondered why DC doesn't develop him to take the center stage. Meanwhile Marvel can develop small unknowns like Deadpool to step up when Wolverine is waning.

I think that Dick Grayson came into his own as a character in The New Teen Titans in the 1980s, even before he adopted the identity of Nightwing. However, remember that DC's Dan Didio does not have much respect for Grayson and wanted to kill him off in Infinite Crisis. Fortunately, he was talked out of it.

Nightwing is my favorite hero in DC and I think the problem is that they don't know what to do with him. He's the first sidekick, and he's also Batman's first sidekick. He's the first one (I think) to actually go out and become his own hero. He's popular enough for DC to keep him from dying, but not enough for them to really know how to handle him. He needs his own villains and plots, which New 52 did sort of give him. But he needs todo more than just go out and stop general crime every night. He's basically Social Batman, and I'd have liked to see more from him on this front. As a writer, it'd be a dream to be able to write Nightwing but I know I wouldn't get the chance, lol. Even still, it'd be nice to have him back. I'm so far behind I don't even know what he's doing now in the comics.

He IS popular, that's why the writers of these films squeezed him into Under the Red Hood and the Damian films (where he had bigger roles than in the comics). However as user Vohn_Exel said, they don't know how to handle him, they put him there for fan-service only to have him get slapped around to make way for Batman and Damian fan-service.
Unless you're Chuck Dixon, Paul Dini or Greg Weismen, Nightwing will keep getting mishandled.

Yeah it is really weird he doesn’t have a much larger role in the DC universe both in the movies and comics.
He’s a fan favourite and I know any time he popped up in any of the movies or tv episodes I loved it.
Honestly if done really right I feel he could pass Batman in popularity.
Maybe one day we will get a full blown solo Nightwing movie that will do the character justice.
