please explain the ending

Not sure i understood the ending. Why were those men hiding what they knew about the murder and how did it relate to the dead bodies in the house. There are two story lines and they don't seem connected, am i wrong? Please explain.

reply

Spoiler-

The two stories are connected by the red haired girl, Laura, who was the product of the rape of her mother, who was the first love of the stone-faced detective, Paul's, life.

Five men raped her mother, and three of them were blackmailing the rich guy, Henri, so he had them murdered by Damien, Henri's employee, who was also Paul's friend.

Laura and carl were digging up the bodies and putting them in the show houses with Paul's belongings to get paul to go after the mother's rapists and murderer.

The only connection between the dead bodies and the dentist was that Laura visited him in prison to help them both get revenge against Paul, who ditched her mother, and messed up the dentist's son by showing him pictures of his father's victims to shame him into ratting his father out.

Kind of a convoluted plot, but you know what they say about the French...

Thanks so much

One more question are you saying gorbier was a dentist?

reply

Yes, he was the perfect family man during the day, but at night, he'd paint his face white, and go on a killing spree.

His dentist practice explained his constant supply of anesthetic throughout the series.

Since you explained the ending so well could you please explain the wolf? Sandra said something to Paul near the end like, "did you create the wolf?" Was there really a wolf and if not, why did people keep seeing one? Surely this wasn't just a metaphor.

reply

I believe that the wolf was a pet of Carl and Laura. We see it in a cage in Carl's warehouse. The police used the wolf as a tracker to find Laura in the coal machine. At first I thought it was a German Shepherd until I heard Sandra asking Paul if using the wolf was his idea.

How did they know to go to the warehouse at the docks in the final episode? One minute, they were looking round Carl's room, then they went to the docks, but I don't know what tipped them off. I don't recall hearing them mention it. I really enjoyed this series until the last episode, when I kind of lost track of exactly what was going on and even who certain people were (Damien - though I now know).

reply

Actually, I feel your pain re Damien. He was introduced in an early episode and then barely seen as the story reached it's conclusion. It was perfectly understandable to forget who he was, considering he was doing all the killing (albeit as an instrument of someone else).

Still a great series, though...

If there was ever a series that needed a "Previously on..." that didn't have one, it was this. It probably took me 10 weeks rather than 6 to watch it, so for the first ten minutes of each subsequent episode (and when Damian reappeared) I was like a confused old man...

"Wait till they get a load of me!"

reply

It was evident that Damien was the killer. Why was he introduced at all otherwise? And he was not only shown at the start. When Norbert was arrested for interrogation he had a fit.

The room tipped her off to the fact that Carl was the one who owned the wolf. At that point she would have asked the foster mother for more details about him. The foster mother might have known where he lived. She mentions how the girl Laura/Valérie was distant from her, but we don't know if that was also the case with Carl. At the very least, she could have given details like his full name and date of birth, and they might have looked him up from there.
