Selfish horrible characters

My wife made me watch the pilot on HBO on demand. It was miserable. Sarah Jessica parker's character was a selfish bitch. Why would people watch a character so unlikable?

reply

I started watching, skipped forward and tried a few bits, then pressed delete.

Horrible characters and no humour.

reply

Generally agree, though "I went to a strip club. Where there were strippers. Who were stripping. And became nude." made me laugh.

reply

Actually I REALLY loved his "drop the mike" performance at the end, when he ends the conversation with her and gives a whole "this show is over" mood....soooo well done that he turns the tables on his self absorbed and horrid wife

reply

Well, it's realistic. We're all a bit selfish. This was the moment in their lives where everything was coming to a head and their doomed marriage was falling apart, she looked selfish. He even said, "I'm gonna make your kids hate you".

reply

Yikes! Realistic? I'm happy to not know anyone like any of those people.

reply

Uh...yeah....you do, LyonME: you just haven't seen them pressed against the wall when faced with someone else's vile self absorption that threatens to take out all the good, balanced, meaningful things they had in their lives that they actually trusted to be reall..so...I hope you never see your friends in this situation, but don't bet they don't have it in them when pushed to the wall....we all do.

Selfish because she's unhappy and wants to leave after already making attempts to save her marriage? What a ridiculous thing to say. Using that argument, anyone who breaks up with someone is "selfish". It's much better to leave someone if you're unhappy and can't save the relationship, then to stay with them out of pity. THAT is selfish and only causes much more pain in the long run.

You might try watching the episodes. There's zero evidence she did anything at all to try to "save her marriage." She cheated on her husband for a year, told him coldly she wanted a divorce, all the while intending to move in with her new life savior, the granola man. Only AFTER finding out this prof wanted nothing to do with her situation did she try to "save" her marriage. That's pathetic. She was only trying to save herself from taking a look in the mirror to see the monster she'd become. She's the classic sort of dope who looks for her salvation and happiness in other people, while giving little in return.

reply

I was about to say the same, at no point did she try to save her marriage. She was so sneaky too how she nearly had her husband convinced to do everything amicablely all to her benefit and totally screwing him over. Don't get me wrong, when children are involved a divorce should be as amicable as possible AFTER you've exhausted all measures to save it and have been 100% honest with your spouse. I'm a liberal, progressive, atheist, and reasonable feminist but I feel this show displays misandry at times which is definitely not funny.

reply

Why does everyone always assume the characters' lives began on the day we met them? How do you know she hadn't done anything to save the marriage in all the years they'd been married? How do you know what happened to make the marriage fall apart? You don't. None of us do. "There's zero evidence she did anything at all to try and save her marriage" is a pretty big pronouncement to make when you've seen mere snippets out of decades of their lives. And it often takes several seasons of a show to find out what went before, and how/why/when things started to unravel.

Who the heck wants to watch an anti-romcom? Depressing and annoying.

They aren't very likable, are they?

Nice to see Jemaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords, one of my favorite comedy shows ever. HBO still runs an episode of Flight occasionally.

reply

Yes!!! He was the one bright point (though funny to see Lloyd from Wings too). Loved Flight of the Conchords.

Lowell, not Lloyd. But I knew who you meant.

I can deal with selfish, even deplorable, characters, but they need to be entertaining and these characters are not . . .

reply

Yes, Molly Shannon is just playing a sad garden variety drunk suburban housewife. The best part of stopping drinking is that those people evaporate from your life.

My Chimp DNA seems to have lost its password temporarily. Sluggr-2

OP sounds like he's pussy whipped so he came here to vent against women.

reply

Zacopeland, you're right: but that's possibly more the reality of it than any other polished and buffed show you'll watch. I wrote in my message board post, she is so unbelievably self centred, speaking to the man she's screwing about divorcing her husband, and all her "deep realisations" focus only on her, no one else. I love his "drop the mike" scene at the end. Love it. Also, her friend is an utter bitch as well...so I think it's going to be interesting...

all the characters were selfish yes. i think maybe its a cultural thing than anything else? NY / East Coast rich privileged society?
