hold on, did she ever even have the job?

Because it looked to me like the people at Sotheby's never made her an actual offer, and were just weirded out by her subsequent proposal.

That they then went with another firm for their recruiting needs only underscored how they really wanted nothing to do with her, IMO.

In fact, her very request initially to be considered for the position seemed to have made them uncomfortable - or was that just my impression? Anyway, I wish they went more into this in the episode.

But then, Robert's behavior was never explained either, so I suppose I can't really complain about that.

They made her an offer, with a huge salary. That's why she was in the elevator with the guy in the glasses. She went to accept, and then tried to get them to let her work for free, for six months. She weirded him out with her offer and her personal issues. She had the job and effed it up.

reply

I see. I suppose there is no reason not to take her at her word when she told Robert she got a job offer.

Oh, well. Yet one more depressing thing about this show. 

I like the show, the acting is great. But I guess, the subject matter is just too depressing, for a comedy. That whole scene with Frances and the art gallery people was painful to watch. You are being forced to believe, that Frances is that stupid, yet the character is anything but dumb.

The other scene that was supposed to be funny, I guess, was Robert terrorizing the professor. Then forcing him to take a gun, for what? To kill himself? For sleeping with a married woman? I think Robert is my least favorite person on the show.

reply

I didn't understand the point of Robert's behavior either. He said earlier to the church people that he "has something" for the professor, but I don't see how this was logical.

It is interesting to me, as a divorced woman myself, to observe how Frances doesn't respect Robert at all, and is in fact embarrassed by him. Makes one wonder why or how they got married in the first place.

this /\

Maybe they were alike when first married, but she thinks she's "evolved". She has, into an ass hole... but after about the third episode the show took extraordinary efforts to turn Robert into an ass hole too.

If we're lucky maybe next sundays episode they will go "War of the Roses" and kill each other and next and every season can have a new cast of divorcees... Same way Secret and Lies is a new cast n story every season.

reply

To me by showing Robert to be an ass, you realize why she cheated on him and wanted a divorce.

reply

Sure, but why did she marry him in the first place? Seems to me they are pretty obviously mismatched.

reply

We're seeing them- what, 20 years after they originally met?

reply

Yeah, but come on, it's obvious she "married down".

reply

i dont think it's obvious she married down. we dont know about their past.

reply

For me it's enough to just hear the way Robert pronounces the word "details".
