Why did it fail at the Box office?

Now i must admit that for me the first 34 minutes
or so was boring but after that it turned into a mostly entertaining film.

(Finding Dory did better with only a first 15 minutes
of boredom before getting better.)

That it failed in the Usa isn't the biggest surprise.
The biggest surprise is that it also failed in the international
markets with under 25 million.

Seems like this is the kind film that would have been liked in
China and in Japan.

My theory is that along the way,the company didn't want to
put the effort or money behind it for the markets outside the
Usa.

reply

A stolen script based off countless tiresome Asian fables that everyone knows about already except white America.

reply

My guess is that people like to see stories about their own ethnic group.
Kubo seems to be about an Asian kid, so a White majority country is not going to flock to a story like that.

reply

If this election proved anything, it's how much hostility there is in large segments of white America towards other races. I thought things had progressed, but obviously not.

reply

The hostility was more towards a White-bashing media, which has been doing that for 50 years now.
Imagine the media in China bashing Chinese people for 50 years, talking about "Chinese Privilege", and forcing Diversity down Chinese people's throats. The same outcome would happen there as happened in the US.

reply

No such thing as a white bashing media! You mean angry, bitter white people that want to blame their self caused *beep* lives on someone or something.

reply

Trump has made crazy white supremacists believe they are an endangered species. LOL! Giving equal chances to every man and woman, whatever their race, has made poor white men compete with others. They just can't catch a break, but they can always blame women and people of other races for the fact they're failures.

reply

No one is stopping people from building up their own countries.
Go ahead and build up China/India/50 countries in Africa.
You "need" to be among White people in order to succeed?
Why is that?

reply

America is not a "white" country. It never was and it will be less so in the future.

reply

It was 90% White from 1900 through 1970, for 70 years.
Doesn't that qualify as a "White" country?

reply

As any "white" people in the US were immigrants, it never was a "white country".

reply

Everyone in every country outside Africa is an immigrant or a descendant of an immigrant.

reply

White bashing media? My god WTF are you talking about?

reply

What about Mulan and Pocahontas?

Not the top animated Box Office hits from Disney
but they did pretty good.

reply

Disney's a machine, maximum publicity, maximum tie-ins. Anything they put out gets automatic audiences and, given the incomprehensibly good reviews of Moana, critics just love anything Disney does.

reply

Literally didn't see one advert for it.

I've answered this in another topic, but the reality is that only a certain kind of animated film does well financially right now. The film has to have a reasonable budget, has to be CG, and has to have a decent amount of comedic elements. Without those, they are doomed to failure because animation respect is still lacking in most places. I would have also said they need to be family friendly, but Sausage Party proves that just having the other three things is enough. Now in markets like Japan of course you have anime, but even those aren't doing great money wise. Up until this year with Your Name being the number film in Japan, even Studio Ghibli films weren't making the big box office numbers they used to. I don't have all the answers, especially not for every country but animation as a whole is still too niche to succeed beyond the big budget CG films.

reply

It's too weird.

reply

I wonder about advertising - was it advertised enough and in enough markets? When I spoke to people about it, they all said, "Huh?". Only a faction of animation fans seemed to be aware of it. Now that it's out of the theater, people are starting to tell me about it.

reply

It's kind of hard to market as well.

reply

Missed the mark in every way possible.
the animation was poorly done.
The monkeys voice did not fit the character at all.
The script was horrible
Boring from beginning to end
Was forgettable, so much so that the next day I could not remember what it was about.
