Pity turns to contempt

It is very rare that you start a film feeling sorry for the main character and despising them by the end. Katherine is such a selfish , manipulative woman that you wish that she gets her just dessert.Well done to Florence Pugh for portraying such a vile woman.

I didn't find myself hating Katherine by the end of the film, far from it. Society, her family and the man she ultimately trusted with her heart failed her time and time again. She wasn't selfish, she strived for freedom and did what she had to in order to achieve it.

I'm not sure about that, Friend. Having a child die because he got in the way, speaks volumes. She even allows her lover to hang in order to escape justice. At least he had pangs of guilt. Katherine displayed zero scruples. This being the 1800s, her word against a black farm hand is going to be taken as gospel. In her mind, the ends justified the means. Her survival was all that mattered to her.

Well, that could probably be said for most people, when it comes right down to it. If you're facing the gallows I imagine you'll sacrifice anyone (mothers aside, of course.)
