Been down this road before

I suppose each writer assumes he/she's bringing a new twist, but we've seen so many variations on this theme I simply have no desire to see what patina gets applied to this one.

I would disagree. Haven't personally come across many flicks that examine a young person caregiving for a sick single parent.

If you know of others movies with this theme, let us know. This topic is what caught my attention of this film.

Does it really make it more interesting because she's single? This theme has been explored many many times and with more in depth twists and varying points of view. In the end JW has strong performances, but how interesting is it to basically sit there and watch someone die slowly? Now that's entertainment!

I can certainly relate to not wanting to watch a movie like this—and I wouldn't recommend it as fun-filled escapist entertainment—but I don't think the point is to "watch someone die slowly", rather it's to see a seemingly shiftless, dissolute youngster handle the situation in a way his behavior wouldn't otherwise suggest is possible.

That said, it ain't necessarily easy watching. I thought this movie did a good job not wallowing in tragi-porn. I've seen far worse, more graphic, more grueling representations.

I go to the movies more than you.

The lead character is a spoiled putz. I can't see him redeeming himself. Up until the end of the film, he was a lying, psycho, selfish, bastardo. I don't sense any great change in the character, or even minor ones. Up until the near end of the film, he is partying his azzy off, blowing job interviews, etc...
