Neil is a liar.

He's always pontificating about how he's doing everything "for the people", and "for the town".

What crap. Neil is doing all this stuff for Neil, regardless of what it does to the town, or its people.

He's such an odious little worm of a man. I'm a little surprised that someone hasn't shot him yet.

The residents of McCarthy seem to enjoy Neil's saloon, they all shop at his mercantile store, and many are getting electricity from his generator. Sometimes helping other people and benefitting yourself go hand in hand.

It seems most of the people migrated to McCarthy to get away from people, from civilization, and live the primitive frontier life. Neil's plans will do away with much of that.

If Neil was a human being, he would announce to the town, "My plans to open the mine to tourists will fundamentally change your lives here in McCarthy. Do I have your blessing?" And let the town make that decision democratically.

But Neil, being a slimy little weasel, plans to go ahead with his plans regardless of how it will affect the town and its people, and that's what has Jeremy boiling mad. And I don't blame him.

Neil wants to benefit Neil. And he couldn't care less how that affects other people.

How does money work there? There isn't a bank where people can get money from? How do people make money to buy things? Seems like everyone is mostly just living off the land.

Every Alaska citizen gets a check from oil profits. The Brown Family in "Alaskan Bush People" are charged with fraud because they claim they live in Alaska full time in order to get the payments but have lived in Arizona for a substantial part of the year.

These are the family that have moved from place to place and owned several boats.Last season, the father bought a HUGE boat to go into the freight delivery business even though they need to go up shallow bays, rivers, etc.

Long story short, they are a bunch of idiots.

While reading about their upcoming trial, I saw that the maximum payment was something like $1,500 per year, IIRC. That isn't much, but a lot of these people are living off the grid.

reply

Darwin-t, the max payment can be substantially more than $1,500.

Exactly, like Jeremy says, it's going to fundamentally change McCarthy. It'll erase the very reason why most of them went there in the first place. I highly doubt Neil could survive there without all his amenities like electricity when McCarthy was there before him. He thinks he's their modern age savior.

The regular mail plane could easily deliver whatever his store provides, it just became a matter of more immediate convenience that the townspeople became dependent upon it. Let's face it, his Motel is for tourists only and the Bar can be anybody's home in that small town, also for tourists.

If Neil really wants to be a businessman he should go to a more modernized and bigger town in Alaska or lower 48, but he's a low-life in that endeavor and that's why he needs to be where nobody else wants to be one. He's a disrupting sapper of dreams.

Regardless, the rest of them wouldn't have agreed to this show if they really wanted to keep McCarthy that way. Tourism will only increase because of it so reality-scripting is taking place which makes the feud dragged out to be the main conflict of the show that much more annoying.

solar -- you raise a good point. If these people were so hell-bent on throwing off the trappings of civilization, they would not have agreed to have a camera crew follow them around for 12 hours a day. This applies to all these so-called Alaska reality shows.
