People actually vacation there??

For what? Last weeks episode showed a hundred or so tourists milling around on main street. There are like two buildings in town, what else is there to do?

Do people really want to go deep into some nasty old shut down mine shaft after trekking all the way up a mountainside?

If you deflect the topic of the thread from the show to me, our discussion is over

I'm sure there are plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, rafting, hunting, mountainbking, mountinclimbing, hunting etc. According to McCarthy's wikipedia page, "The old mine buildings, artifacts, and colorful history attract visitors during the summer months."

The Kennecot Mining Town is actually part of the National Park Service. McCarthy is not quite as barren as portrayed on TV. There is a hotel called The Kennecot Lodge, and numerous B&B's in the area, and outdoor enthusiast's find no shortage of activities in the area: hiking, fishing, rafting, mountain biking, etc.

Is there truly a road into town that people can drive, contrary to what is shown on the show? If not, I don't know how tourists get there, or delivery trucks like the one that delivered Neil's generator.

I was there a couple months ago. The Kennecott Mine is interesting and there's lot of hiking and rafting. It's a beautiful area, and I wish I could have spent more time.

If you were there... What did you see or learn about Neils "progress" in raping the town?

I was unfamiliar with the show before I went, so I didn't really know what to look for. Nobody I dealt with complained about tourists, but then they were making money from me, so they probably wouldn't complain. The town didn't look raped. In fact, except for a few buildings that had been fixed up, like the yellow hotel, it still looked pretty shabby, not that there's anything wrong with that.

Having watched the show since, it's evident how much it is staged. For example, there's one scene where Jeremy waits for Neil at the bridge as Neil returns to town from the mine. One problem, the bridge isn't between the mine and town.

Second, they're making a big deal about him building a hotel, when there is already a hotel and B & Bs in the vicinity.

Third, they make a big deal about improving the power grid, but they already had electricity in town and up at the mine, so the uproar is just drama for the show.

Last, if they really don't want people there, they should ask the state to stop improving the road, because the road really isn't that bad any more, at least not in the summertime, though I can imagine the road being bad after a rain or the snowmelt. When I was there it wasn't a problem except for old railroad spikes that can mess up your tires, but I didn't see any of those.
