Would someone help me understand the ending? (spoilers, duh)

I just finished watching the movie and I loved it. It was incredibly powerful and thoughtful, but I couldn't understand the meaning of the ending: including the vision with the kakruna caapi. I know there's something there, the vision means something, I can feel it. The end too with the 2nd explorer in the same spot with the butterflies around him. Maybe it means he can finally hear the land around him. I'm not sure...

I saw the butterflies but didn't realize it was a different explorer. The two explorers looked alike or not. One was young and one was sick or what?

It was the guide who had the butterflies around him first, not either of the scientists. I don't remember whether it was his younger self or older self.

Regardless, when second scientist woke up, the guide's necklace was in his hand and the guide was gone. It also looked like a lot of time had passed. Now the second scientist had the butterflies around him.

I'm guessing that the guide passed his powers to the scientist. The version I watched didn't have the best subtitles but I got the impression that he told the scientist that this was going to happen.

I have no clue about the psychedelic part of his vision, will have to watch it again.

Thank you, that seems to be a reasonable explanation... Now I just want the answer as to what the vision means, I will definitely have to watch it again.
