Well, now that her daughter has had her chance to vent

the next movies or documentaries can only go up from here. This was the most depressing film, and it spent far too much time on the abuse without truly placing Nina Simone's artistic contributions in perspective. It was obvious from her music that she endured--and possibly inflicted, a great deal of pain, but did I really need the ex producer daughter who was disinherited from Simone's will, to offer a running commentary throughout? I was expecting to hear and see other voices as well, those who could also offer a historical analysis, and not just the personal, emotional one. Both of these are vital and would have made for a stronger work overall.

But Lisa Kelly is right, "everything else is gravy," now that she's finally gotten so much off her chest. Looking forward to seeing other works--but no, not the one starring Zoe Saldana. Lisa Kelly has great casting ideas, but while I like Zoe, she would be so miscast in the role of this legend.

It was Mommie Dearest-esque in some ways

Saldana was already cast as Nina four years ago the other Simone film, which most of its haters haven't even seen yet,but have continously slammed anyway. Even Ms. Kelly herself has said that people need to quit putting Zoe down about it, becausse she didn't write or direct the film (which is just now coming out after almost four years, because it's an indie film) and even Saldana herself has expressed some mild disatisfaction with how the biopic turned out.

After seeing Zoe in blackface, what more does one need to see? I have seen enough of her work to know she neither has the gravitas nor the skill to convinvingly portray any part of Ms. Simone's story. Unfortunate casting, to say the least.
