Ratings slump. An insider at CBS says this show is in serious trouble

My source says this show will be gone in less than 6 months. And I'm not surprised by this in the least. The show is absolutely terrible. 2 months in and the viewership has already dropped a whopping 28.2%

Dave is gone. The ratings decline was expected. They will easily wait until after Colbert debuts to see how it goes. Corden should be reasonably safe until December. I personally do not expect Corden to last a year, but I also see what CBS is hoping for as well. Right now CBS does not have a lot to lose keeping Corden in line for the summer. Blockbuster season is upon us. Those productions use late night promotion. Bumping Corden up by 30 minutes might help a bit until Colbert comes on the air.

I can't say I'm surprised. Corden just doesn't have what it takes to host a late night talk show. He's simply unsuited for the role. What prompted CBS to hire him in the first place is a mystery.

reply

They'll keep the Colbert/Corden combo for at least six months just to see if it works or not. Probably a year. They're not gonna roll the dice on another host until Colbert is firmly established in a strong position.

I don't understand why Cbs went with an unknown British guy to host an American Late Night show.James is ok he tries a little bit too hard to be funny and his skits outside is awkward. I am glad they brought a band to LLS

reply

They picked a relative unknown and have replaced his previous well know and reasonably popular lead in with freaking drama re-runs and not even always the same show.

And now they are surprised the ratings are low?

reply

All of the viewing seems to be done on Youtube where the car pool skits especially are generating millions of views. I just did a quick rough count of the views of his ten most popular uploads and the total around 80 million views. People seem to want sound bite entertainment in five minute chunks these days and the show excels in that market. What he does works but perhaps not in the present four nights per week late night slot.

reply

I do not believe CBS makes a lot or any money off of those. It is unlikely CBS would keep a guy based on results of a platform in which anyone with a camera and an obnoxious schtick can get millions of views with no budget at all. CBS is just not in the sound bite business, and it does not appear to be on the horizon for the foreseeable future. Corden on the other hand probably has a better than dim future in podcasting or celebrity reality challenge series.

CBS is just not in the sound bite business

Except that trends show that this is how the youger generations watch TV so they might miss the boat on that one if they aren't paying attention.

He is getting better but I agree the ratings are not ratings that will survive, however CBS (if they are going to be fair) needs to put him up after something better than old reruns of cancelled or soon to be cancelled series. It would be absurd to expect him to be doing well with no lead in and almost no promition.

The only smart business model I can see at work, and CBS tends to be more patient and smart about their moves than the likes of NBC and ABC, is giving him a chance to find his footing without over-promoting him, and then promote the crap out of him when Colbert comes back on the air in September.

He is getting better at it and finding his bits that generate viral promotions so if this is what they are doind I could see it working out.

As I said you don't take a total unknown like Corden and put him on after reruns and expect anything else to happen than what is happening.

On the other hand it would have been interesting to see what Craig would have done with this kind of budget. They are clearly putting more money in it.

reply

If people enjoy his singing bits then let him host a reality singing show not a late night talk show. I'm fed up with his BS singing.

reply

Letterman sucked but not as much as Jimmy Fallon who is the absolute worst. Pretty much every late night talk show is horrible but Corden's is at least somewhat entertaining. The best show of this kind is Graham Norton on BBC America.

reply

Letterman was one of the most original and innovative hosts in late night TV history. So was Craig Ferguson. Compared to them Corden is an embarrassment.

reply

I agree with this.

reply

I kind of figured his ratings would go down without Dave's lead in. I don't know why CBS is showing reruns of their dramas in that slot instead of classic Letterman episodes or The Late Show with guest hosts. Were they "testing" Corden? Craig Ferguson was my main reason for watching the Late Late Show, so I've hardly seen any of James Corden's shows.

reply

CBS isn't showing classic Letterman episodes because they don't have the rights to them. When Letterman's show ended, it ended CBS's association with Worldwide Pants, which owns the rights to Letterman's episodes. And they're not doing The Late Show with guest hosts because they're spending the summer to renovate the Ed Sullivan Theatre for Colbert, so it can't be used. Having drama reruns lead-in for Corden probably is a test for him to see what his core audience is, as opposed to what his audience is when he has a good lead-in.

DemonG,
I agree.
This show will not last.
Very disappointing.

Slump? He only just started with a lead in that wasn't a freaking re-run. It never had any chance to get ratings to speak of.

I will say that he has gotten better since he started but I still found Ferguson far more entertaining when he was at his best. Hell he was significantly more amusing when he didn't give a crap anymore.

It seems that your "source" is a complete retard with no grasp on reality.

I leave you with this:
