Bout that food tho...

Haven't seen the movie so I got a question: does it have all the stuff about fast food and how unhealthy it is and how morally wrong the production of the meat is and all this scandalous stuff? Or is it more of a business type movie where u see this guy coming from nothing, building his empire kinda thing?

Chhhhhheeeeeerrrrrsssss

The latter.

Kroc's not a saint according to this movie. He mortgages his house without telling his wife (but this is the era when women lack property rights if they are married anyways!). He's abusive to associates.

But he did not come from nothing. he had been selling items prior to the McDonalds corporation being started. This is just the one concept which did REALLY take off.

Agree that the food sucks. But DID like the overall message of having to work hard to achieve any 'big thing' in life. I think that anybody can relate to this even if we don't care for pre-made food.

the coffee is not bad

Did anyone know here in the 1930s when MCDonalds started (not in San Bernadino!) in 1937 they were attempting to sell not hamburgers but HOT DOGS!

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

reply

And I still enjoy the food, sometimes I have two double burgers as a pick me up. :D

I don't think that's the message at ALL of the movie.

The film is almost a moral tale of greed and a man who saw two successful brothers and wanted to be them. And he admits as much in the end: what made them so special wasn't the food or the system they developed, it was their name. They were both so wholesome and Kroc was none of that. He wanted to create that into a brand and he did. But ultimately, at what costs? He loses all his humanity in the process.

Kroc definitely comes across as maniacal and evil. Just because you want to be successful doesn't mean you have to destroy people to do it. The brothers also should have been easier to work with, but personally, if someone comes out of nowhere and offers to "franchise" my business, I wouldn't say yes easily. Then again, I also wouldn't tell them my business secrets. Be careful who you let in to your life.

If you want a feel good movie about a good person who succeeds at business without being slimy, watch Joy.

Technically we did see Mac McDonald's health issues come up towards the end of the movie, and potential kidney failure, which is likely based on him eating too many of his own McDonald's burgers and fries. Don't get me wrong, the food is great, but if that's all you eat--it could be, trouble. Variety for food is key.

reply

He was diabetic. Not a burger junkie.

reply

Yeah, I knew about that. BTW I am too..that's why I have just one food item (preferably a small burger) from them a day these days. :)

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

reply

I've never seen the movie. I have seen documentaries on McD's history.
At the time, the issue of fast food being unhealthy wasn't exactly a hot button issue.

reply

true--this was same era when doctors smoked.

reply

Yes it was. I still remember my doctor lighting up in the room after an examination. We never thought anything of it.

reply

my mom used to get me and my brother tons of fast food every summer when we were out of school--and she did not want to prepare lunch for us while we were home. The happy meals back then had both a French fry and cookie.

It looks more health conscious now with apple slices and oranges.

"It looks more health conscious now with apple slices and oranges."

Wow! That's an improvement! I haven't been to McD's in years. I recall getting our son Happy Meals when he was a little boy back in the early 80's. He liked the little toys that went with them.

reply

uh-huh. I'm impressed too.

reply

Keep in mind that fast food portions decades ago were also SMALL compared to those monstrosities they sell today. It's interesting that people were content with a smaller serving size, when everything nowadays has to be humongous.

reply

Oh, I know all about SUPER SIZING! LOL!
Along with those salads they offer these days, they ought to go back to those smaller portions.

reply

What just happened? Did you delete, or did you get deleted????
Now I'll be up all night wondering what you just said!😊

reply

Oops, I had forgotten that I responded eight months ago, so I basically typed up the exact same thing and posted it again. I then deleted it out of shame and embarrassment when I saw that I had repeated myself months later!

reply

I've done that myself! I have been about to post on some thread, and discover a post I made a few years back on IMDb. It's always a pleasant surprise when I see that my thoughts are much the same. I have yet, to run across one where I get the chance to argue with myself!LOL!

Hell no WAY! This ain't "Super Size Me"!

reply

Super Size Me just made me want to go to McDonald's more often! Mmmmm tasty Big Mac.

reply

The Big Mac is okay but I like the Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese the best!

reply

Big N' Tasty for me.

McD's has been my comfort food for over 50 years. I'm not proud of it, but there it is. And it's dependable that you will get the same thing at any McDonald's, anywhere in the world. I find that comforting and efficient. I don't care how badly Kroc treated these guys. He had a totally different vision than they did. Result: I get my McDonald's when I want it, no matter where I am.

reply

But you actually don't get the exact same thing at McDonald's anywhere in the world. They adjust the menu to suit local tastes. I've had pizza at McDonald's in Canada, and Asian-seasoned McDonald's burgers in Asia. And McDonald's restaurants in India do not serve beef or pork; and some have vegetarian-only menus.

reply

true dat, LivingMCM - there are menu options that are specific for the region -- here in Hawaii McD's has Portuguese sausage (or Spam)/eggs/rice for b'fast, but they also have the standards reg hamburger, Big Mac, Filet-o-fish, McDonald's fries, etc. <

reply

The sausage and spam sound fantastic!

reply

Good call sir... Excellent hangover food. And for me they still have the best french fries (don't know why but every other fast food fry is the same) I always laugh when they try to come out with other serious foods like serious maple chicken or tie glaze chicken

Although there has been some I have liked. They used to have awesome pizza, and their brief period where they had deli sandwiches

reply

captainbucky- hadn't seen the pizza or deli sandwiches anywhere I've lived, but they do roll out different stuff for sure from time to time. HATE the modern chocolate shake - "ice cream"/syrup/whipped cream. The syrup tastes like coffee to me, a non-coffee drinker. I personally would prefer McD's to cut their menu down considerably. They're starting to look like Jack in the Box, which has everything under the sun (except ice cream).

reply

It's not about the food, its about the man who built the company into a business empire.

reply

The latter, but not quite so simple. The depiction is morally ambiguous with plenty of shades of gray, and not just a straightforward, feel-good success story.
