Would you like them to create some kind of Kryptonian accent? It's a fairly common trope to have "others," in this case the alien Kryptonians, use a British accent. Many sword and sandal epics had Romans speaking in British accents.
I'd rather they have the Kryptonians speak with a consistent, albeit it British, accent, then have a plethora of different accents.
Good point. It would be better if a show like this had an introduction a la 'Hunt for Red October' presenting them first speaking in an Alien language then shifting into English for the sake of the audience but us knowing they were still speaking their language. Then the accents could be explained away as essentially a translated version of the planets various dialects.
The problem for me with this show...or at least what I find incredibly distracting is that, with the introduction of Adam Strange who is from Earth, Kryptonian and English apparently sound and mean exactly the same despite written Kryptonian symbols/syntax being distinctly alien from English. And on Krypton they apparently use the same human colloquial expressions like cool, shit, punk and pa (as in grandpa). Despite the fact that colloquialisms are a product of culture.
This is a nitpick, I know. But given the amount of detail that they put into other sci-fi/horror/fantasy series, especially with regards to languages, and how people communicate across language barriers in those shows, the lack of it here seems more obvious and makes it look lazy in comparison.
I can see some of your points. I have no idea if they hired an actual conlanger to develop the script for the show or not. There have been a couple of "Kryptonian" scripts published over the years. All of them suffer from being a one to one mapping of Kryptonian letters to the Roman alphabet. That is definitely a lazy way to go.
Perhaps, if the show takes is successful, we'll see some more details developed.
I just found it distracting that they all were British. Had they all been American with American accents, I would not have given it a second thought. I know this show will probably play overseas as well, but the main audience is here in the US. So why not hire actors here with American accents? Did we run out? All the actors in the US are employed now so we have to go overseas? It just strikes me as odd that they all are British. It's just as odd as if every actor on Modern Family were British.
But here I am nitpicking accents. I'm not talking about plot or characters or story arcs. I'm talking accents. That's my biggest take away from this show. Tells you something about how good or bad this show is.
Doesn't matter. I won't be watching any episodes past the pilot.
