Best jump scare ever?

I've just seen this film and loved it. Comparisons with Babadook are fair I'd say. There is a jump scare I won't spoil here but you'll know it when you watch the film. I almost shouted out loud in fright, the chap in front of me screamed F&%K then looked somewhat abashed. As good as the grave scene at the end of Carrie if not better. Great creepy atmospheric tension. Recommended.

I saw it in a fairly small, but fairly full, theatre and it was notable how many people did the "holy *beep* that scared me" laugh after the scene you're talking about.

reply

I totally agree, that WAS the best jump scare EVER for me! I'm not sure why my body had such a huge reaction to it, as it wasn't any more scary than others, but this one got me. It got me good.
Wonder why that was...

reply

ok i watched it... where was it?

reply

The jump scare occurred when the arm smashed through the window 48 minutes into the movie whilst the mother was dreaming.

reply

I wouldn't call that the best jump scare ever...

and I don't think having jump scares is a good thing. It's a cheap way to "scare" people. LOUD NOISES ARE SCARY

I agree, I'm not a fan of jump scares by any means, but unlike yourself, this one had a HUGE effect on me. Maybe it was because I wasn't expecting any jump scares in this film, which sounds stupid, I know; of course an effective jump scare is unexpected, but you know what I mean, yes? And I usually don't even waste my time on films that rely on jump scares for horror...

reply

Really? It was good but obvious and very derivative of a similar scare in the descent

reply

Interestingly enough, that jump scare in The Descent didn't scare me at all (in fact, that movie didn't scare me at all, period), but this jump scare did actually make me jump, and I'm not usually susceptible to jump scares.

In fact, this movie scared me quite a bit, and very few movies have ever scared me, so well done to the people who made this!

Peter, is your social worker in that horse?

reply

There's nothing wrong with a couple of jump scares.

CG gore is the worst thing that has ever happened to the horror genre.

reply

Yeah, I near shat my pants.

reply

Totally agree. I watch a ton of scary flicks... not since I was a kid, has a movie actually made me jump in my seat.... Cheap thrill or not, it was great to experience that again.... Great film overall.

Not bad - 7.5

I really wish any jump scare actually worked for me. People don't like them because it seems lazy, but this one like any other had no effect on me. I think I need to be "disturbed" to interpret a movie as scary at all and it seems so hard to find that, even in most "horror" films. Sigh.

reply

Yeah that was a good one. Reminded me of The Descent

reply

I jumped and yelled too, lol. Well done.

Carrie had jump scares? It was a complete droll for me.

And yes, among the best I've seen as well. I'm one of those people who have gotten used to hackneyed jump scares used in horror movies these days, but this one totally got me saying *holy eff!*.

One day in the year of the fox came a time remembered well...

reply

Yes Carrie had the best known and beloved jump scare as did Friday the 13th - the end of Carrie at the grave site?

reply

jump scares usually don't have an effect on me, but i flinched at this one

so many movies, so little time
