Even better the Summer Wars

reply

I thought it was great but not as good as Summer Wars or Girl (haven't seen Wolf Children yet!)

The first hour was awesome. While losing boy Kyuuta was tough, I still liked older Kyuuta's relationship with Kumatetsu. But once he started visiting the human world the movie became kind of a mess.

His "learning to read" montage was almost comical, as was that awful moaning CGI sperm whale. It was so OBVIOUS Iozen's son was a human in a hat, I was confused up until the very end why no one addressed it (also thought he was a girl in the first scene). Why do human's have super powers in the beast world if they become hateful? We're just told it can happen, then it does. Sorry, Iozen was right, no humans seems like a great rule!

I liked Kaede, but Kyuuta's father seemed like a pointless character to me, and once he showed up Kyuuta stopped having flashbacks of his mom, a more interesting part of his past imo.

I would've preferred their visits to the other masters to last 10-15 minutes rather than 2-3, allowing Kyuuta to stay younger for awhile.

Minor complaints, really, I still give it 8/10.

I agree with you about the human world. If they cut that part then they could of had Kyuuta grow up a little slower and his relationships with everyone else could have been shown in more detail.

I really enjoyed it. Mamoru Hosoda has quickly become one of my favorite directors.

I'll have to rewatch Summer Wars to compare.

Let's be bad guys.
