This was good

Absolutely loved the "Beast" characters.

But this was not on the level of Hosoda Mamoru's best films.
Few missteps of the film was in its second half.
So Ren goes back to the human world and meets his father. That's good story to tell.

However the inclusion of character Kaede was puzzling.
She was a walking cliche anime girlfriend who:
1. Gives character building advises.
2. Feels lonely.
3. Can't connect with anyone but the protagonist.
4. Does not get surprised by anything.
5. Has no other commitments except for the protagonist.

It was enjoyable and I still recommend the film but that character was perhaps the least appealing character I've seen in Hosoda Mamoru's excellent film career.

Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame

I don't mind the "it takes a village to raise a child" storyline in itself. But the parent(s) should have been involved or have both of them die. Then he remembers his mother and father fondly. Because to have a movie about fatherhood that more or less promotes running away comes off as a contradiction.

Kaede was nice but definitely a cliché. Had the writing been a couple notches better it could have been a great movie instead of just better than average.
