What kaiju should have their own standalone and why?

Any thoughts?

I've always liked the idea of a Destroyah film, but really gory and brutal.

Destroyah would be interesting. I've always thought SpaceGodzilla, Ghidorah and Varan deserve standalones myself, the first two mainly due to their interstellar nature and the possibilities they could bring to the kaiju genre, the latter because he has a cool design and is incredibly underused.

A new Gamera as done in the 90's.

Isn't there a new Gamera coming out, though?

Can you not spam entire buildings in the threads, you pillock.

The hell? Who the hell is this guy?

No idea. They've just come and put a whole 6 blocks of this spam, each with a reply. That's 12 spam boxes not including this thread. My guess it's either some entitled weirdo or a bot.

I've reported them, but they're still here.

i'd say, the sub-kaiju that is godzilla's tail in the new movie should get its own spin off

"i'd say, the sub-kaiju that is godzilla's tail in the new movie should get its own spin off"

Presumably those things are being used for "Shin Godzilla 2".

reply

Is there confirmation of Shin 2?

To the best of my knowledge, the next Godzilla Toho film is going to be an anime and presumably not connected to Shin.

Anyway, I think Biollante would make a great stand alone. Super easy to tie all sorts of environmental metaphors into that one.

True. We'll have to wait and see. I hope they do a follow-up to "Shin" and bring the original makers back, as I'd just love to see what else they have in store.

"Anyway, I think Biollante would make a great stand alone. Super easy to tie all sorts of environmental metaphors into that one."

Biollante would be interesting, but I'd rather they use a different theme outside of environmentalism, just because it's kind of been recycled so many times in various Toho movies and with varying degrees of success (if you're interested in environmental horror, a really good one to watch is "The Last Winter").

I could see a couple good ones pass for a stand alone film. Not many though cause the Kaiju don't have enough lore behind them to warrant a single story. Maybe a mini series or something where they each get say 20 minutes of screen time, but not a full budget movie. anyway here's my take.

Biollante: An excavation crew far into the future investigates a rare flower called the Biollante flower. Legends tell of the creature Biollante as the Earth's conscious that saved the world from a great threat. (Godzilla.) The crew explore the forest where the flower was supposedly found (The area Biollante once resided at). They encounter Creatures that have grown to tremendous size because of their diet mostly consisting of plants from the forest, some of them gentle, some of them predators.

King Cesar: There's a little lore about this guy being a guardian for some people. A story that explores it's passed deeds and how it became known as a guardian would be cool. Just as long nobody sings that long winded song to wake him up.

King Ghidorah and Space Godzilla: As someone mentioned before these two have plenty going for them. They could be rivals, chasing each other and battling in space and destroying the civilizations of any planet they land on. (An epic asteroid fight where they are hopping from asteroid to asteroid as they battled is a must.) Alternatively the two could be used by two warring planets as weapons in their battles.

Orga: Not a full length movie, but a story in which we get to see what species created the ship and how and why it ended up on Earth at the bottom of an ocean would be nice.

Toho could always give them all-new backgrounds, kind of like what Shusuke Kaneko had done with Gamera.

That....sounds kind of appealing, in an old Jules Verne/Edgar Rice Burroughs kind of way.

Both definitely have enormous potential. I mean, how cool would it be seeing them travel to various different worlds, crossing not only the boundaries of space but also time itself? It would really redefine the word "epic" within the context of kaiju movies. In terms of King Ghidorah solo, I think it would be cool if it were a dark, gritty Captain Ahab/Moby Dick-type story set in space, with the Ahab-like character being an interstellar mercenary or assassin who seeks to take on the ultimate challenge in the form of Ghidorah himself. Maybe the story could show off Ghidorah's homeworld - a nightmarish vision that produces other Ghidorahs and consumes whole worlds. In terms of SpaceGodzilla, I think he has potential to be a very dark character, even darker than Ghidorah due to his telepathic abilities.

This would definitely make a good story.

I'm glad you like the idea. The cool thing with it being in space is the idea of visiting other planets and its various inhabitants, seeing their technologies and architecture. If done well, it could make for an interesting experience.

Would either Anguirus, Gigan, Titanosaurus or Manda be ideal for a standalone movie? Why or why not?

reply

Anguirus: Maybe

This is a tough one to imagine, but to not play too much into a cliche's Monster vs Monster Movie, one unique way would be to portray a journey with a family of Anguirus in the ancient past attempting to migrate or journey to a new land for whatever reason animals would move and encountering other Kaiju's along the way. It would play more like a nature Documentary I suppose. IF we decide to say that Anguirus walked along side ancient man, then there would be at least an argument that he befriend one of these men. This plot however is a bit of a stretch when taking into consideration the size of humans compared to even a Kaiju of Anguirus's size. In short though he doesn't have much going for him in terms of supernatural abilities (Aside from digging and rolling), He's basically a glorified Ankylosaurus.

Gigan: Yes

It would be neat to see Gigan's conception from whatever planet he came from and the people who captured or created him, (Some considered the Kaiju a cyborg). To see, in a similar plot as mentioned between Ghidorah and Space Godzilla, An Army of Gigans being used in battle against two warring planets in a far off solar system would be interesting. The plot may not focus on Gigan itself, but a reveal of many different prototypes would help explain the multiple version's we've seen come to Earth over the years.

Titanosaurus: Yes

This, more so than Anguirus I could see Human's interacting and making friends with the creature. It's been stated that the scientist who discovered him and his Cyborg daughter were manipulating him with telepathy and that was the reason Titanosuarus was aggressive in the first place. A stand alone movie would explore the Scientists hunt for the creature as well as the premature death and revival his daughter. This plot would garner more sympathy towards the scientist and daughter as well as Titanosuarus as the trio fall into a downward spiral of tragedy after tragedy, before eventually becoming corrupt during the events of Terror of Mechagodzilla.

Manda: NO

I have a hard time imagining this one. I just don't know enough about Manda, In what little appearances we get, to know it's personality, what it's capable of, or what it wants.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In short, Most of these creatures seem to fall into plots that have already been explored in too similar of a way to garner a movie directly for them. But for a die hard fan it would be a welcome alternate telling of stories other franchises have already covered. Like Anguirus starring in "The Land Before Time".

It's like saying. "Yeah, Jaws was cool, but it would be even cooler if instead of a shark people were attacked by a Giant Snake Dragon!" (Manda).

Or. "Legends speak of a creature dwelling at the bottom of the Loch Ness, we call it, Titanosurus!!!".

A nature documentary but with Anguirus and other kaiju....that would be pretty interesting. Another alternative was if they took the GMK approach and made Anguirus into a full-on demon, giving him a more metallic and evil look, kind of like that studded spiked ball thing in the movie "Event Horizon" but as an actual creature, with people stuck onto the end of his spikes, making him like a walking medieval torture device or something.

I like the idea of different prototypes and an army of Gigans. That would be cool to watch. Would he also work for cyberpunk? Has there ever been a kaiju film that is also cyberpunk?

Could be interesting if done well. Part of me would want to see Titanosaurus be given a movie outside of Godzilla, though, Showa era or otherwise.

More the fault of filmmakers in general. Still, he's pretty cool, as he's the only notable kaiju (outside of that awful movie "D-Wars") that is a straight-up Asian dragon (at least, as far as I know). Plus, as far as I know, there's a surprising lack of snake-like creatures within the kaiju genre (if you were to focus specifically on Japanese kaiju movies rather than the tons of awful American movies such as "Boa", "Python" and the like. That also brings up a question - would those movies count as being "kaiju" movies, or would those qualify as "killer animal"?).

True, but one could always start from scratch with them in the way "GMK" and "Shin Godzilla" had. I mean, even 90s Gamera is a vastly different creature from what he was when he first started off as.

Found this little gem right here on Imdb. The creature is the same puppet used for destroy all monsters aside from changing the head to look less like Ghidorah.

Which gave me the thought that you could kill two birds with one stone by making a moving in which Manda "Evolve's" into King Ghidorah.

So I suppose I'll retract my previous NO and say YES to the possibility of a Manda Movie. especially since technically one already exists.

I've always wanted to see "Atragon", but I never could find the video for it. I wonder if it's on YouTube....

I've never thought of that. Cool idea, blinkerslayer!

Rodan. Hands down, the kaiju who needs a modern reboot the most. My reasoning is that in the years since the original Rodan movies of the 50s-70s, our military technology has become increasingly aerial-based. So I envisioned a supersonic Rodan throwing even F-22s, drones and missiles for a loop, showing that even with half a century of technological advancement, they're still no match for his speed and power. I also think that with a modern redesign, Rodan could be made to look extremely intimidating, with his wings evoking the image of Dracula's cape, for example.

Having just seen the trailer for Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it looks like I may finally get my wish!
