A special needs peron? They portrayed her as slow and very naïve, almost retarded. I'm thinking artistic license was used heavily.

She was not special needs or retarded. Her early life was a living hell to begin with, living in a station wagon, surviving on apples and when her parents finally did get a house she was raped for years by another family member and had to take care of numerous younger family members so she had missed an amazing amount of schooling. Her only break from that is when she ran away for some time and was found by a drug dealer who did take care of her for some time and employed her as a drug runner. The dealer was eventually busted and she and another guy also employed as a runner booked it back to the underpass she was found at by the dealer and was found by a friend of the family who called her dad and it was straight back to the hell she was previously in. she was not sheltered, just very used and abused.
