They don't have any serial on the car that told them who it belonged to? I know these things can be erased easily but that should have at least told them the car was stolen, no?
Give them a chance! They've only just found Stevie's DNA inside it, which is causing them great worry. Now Tia's bloke has told River where he got the car from, and River has to pass the information on.
Then, they might start searching for the serial n° to find a previous owner.
It looks a bit like a plot hole from here, but the SOCOs might just have been concentrating on all the rest, like the inside of the car.

Very definitely. It's obvious that he wants rid of River and will go to pretty much any lengths to achieve his aim. I also wonder if the psychiatrist isn't working hand-in-glove with him, or having an affair with him, which won't help River's case much unless she has professional integrity, and who knows what that is these days?
