Is this a remake of Jeff goldblums 2007 show Raines ?

I haven't seen it yet, but the description sounds a lot like Raines (2007).

After two episodes, it sure feels like it. But I really liked Raines so this is a good thing. I don't know of to many UK remakes of US shows other than Law and Order?

reply

I was wondering the same thing. I have watched Raines and whether it was based off it or coincidence, it is the same show

I would not call it a "remake" in any sense. Yes, they're both detectives, and yes, they both see dead people, but that's where the similarities end.

Skarsgård's character could not be more different than Goldblum's. Goldblum's trademark is his glib repartee, and Raines was written with that in mind, but the dialogue was not very sophisticated, spoon-feeding clues. The format of the show was the typical Hollywood cop show formula with a new case every week getting wrapped up nicely by the end of the show and then a little post-mortem discussion, (in case there was something the audience couldn't figure out.)

The trope of seeing dead people isn't new. Ghost Whisperer & Sixth Sense come to mind. Charlie, the main character in Saving Hope, is a surgeon who sees the dead. Grace, in Saving Grace has her own personal angel who helps her, and she's an atheist!

The creators are very different too. Both are brilliant. Graham Yost created Justified, one if my favorite shows. Abi Morgan is great at developing interesting characters -- did you ever see The Hour? Wow - genius!

Thank you for taking the time to reply and it was interesting to read, and I should point out I am a huge fan of both shows, But there are 2 many similarities,

1 there both cops
2 both are odd in there own ways
3 don't have many people who believe in them
4 they each see the guilty/innocent ghosts/manifests and they leave once they solve the crime
5 it turns out that their partner is dead

but I totally agree with the dialogue and clues in Raines are nothing compared to river

there must of been some inspiration from Raines.

Amen to Justified and no I have not seen the Hour but I shall have to put that on my to watch list :)

Well, you could well be right, although. your #4 is weak bc we still don't know who did it in Stevie's case. And River's 'manifests', as he calls them, are there to reveal just as much about him, as they do about the case. In this way, Rivers is character-driven. Whereas, Raines ghosts help him solve his case and there are new ones each week -- i.e. plot-driven.

Also, Abi Morgan is English and appears to live in England full-time --meaning that it's less likely, though not impossible, that she would have seen Raines.

I guess what I'm saying is that it isn't at all unlikely that two very creative minds across the world from one another, came up with similar concepts independently. It happens all the time, sometimes with such similarities that it's eerie! Ask any copyright attorney!

I do not think it matters that Abi Morgan lived in the UK all the time. Raines was shown on British television.

It's that man again!!

reply

There are 2 many similarities maybe they were inspired or that the creators both came up with great shows :)

It says in the trivia section that it is.

reply

I see no mention of Raines in the Trivia section. Just one note about Thomas Neill Cream, also known as the Lambeth Poisoner and another about Stevie & Rivers counting Weightwatch points... Where are you looking?
