Nothing's ever straight forward

I had the sense that Stevie's connection to Haider wasn't romantic, just like I didn't think that Jimmy killed her. (afterall -- that would have solved everything by the 2nd episode!) All that taunting is coming from River's own guilt.

There's something conspiratorial going on between the police chief, the shrink, his boss & her husband -- that was clear early on, but I can't yet put it together...

Anyone else?

The police chief is clearly against River and stated he is only looking for an excuse to get rid of him. His boss and her husband seemed to try and balance the line between personal (they like River) and the professional (making nice with the boss is more important than them liking River).

Edit: Now we know his boss's husband was involved with Stevie's offbooks investigation so him playing nice to River does make sense. I felt so sorry for his wife when they were taking him away!

My biggest gripe is why does River go to this shrink? Is she the only one that works for the department? The fact she's dating the police chief makes her an enemy in my eyes, yet River unloads his soul to her (although he knows of the relationship).

One of the most touching things was how the therapist asked if he could start trusting the living instead of the dead. He trusted her despite her liason with the police chief, which was really healthy for him to do. Because she was trustworthy.

Having seen last week's episode I'll have to amend my statement above but anyway.

Yeah you're right. She does seem trustworthy for now. I think the fact that the police chief asked him about her made River think that the chief is actually serious with the therapist. He isn't using her to get to him or anything similar.

I also like how River seems to open up to his new partner a little. He moves on from Stevie and lets new people in.

Yeah I thought the whole therapist character was very well done. A good aspect of the story.
