Why do police officers drive Mercedes Benz in BBC dramas?

I mean, really, are they paid so well in the UK? Yet, I see it in more than one series.

Mercedes and BMW both make more affordable cars that you won't see in the USA. They are actually pretty common fleet vehicles in Europe.

Yes the taxis in Paris are all Mercedes brand. My friends company car is a Beamer in the uK. But these cheap versions don't drive/ride like their luxe counterparts in the US.

A long, long time ago when I was in high school I went to France for the first time and was astonished to see the cabs were all Mercedes. I had never even been in one up until then because I grew up in a pretty rural part of northern California (really northern...not San Francisco northern) and nobody I knew had one. But yeah...living here I had no idea that they were anything other than cars for rich people.

It's number plate is R486 PAO, which means it was registered in 1997/1998. He could have bought it secondhand at well under £10,000.
