What the hell is happening to Jennifer Garner?

Let me state up front that I love Jennifer Garner. I have since Alias. In that show, we saw that she was capable of doing just about anything. Then she added a great, sexy performance as a hooker in Catch Me If You Can, next came her star turn in 13 Going on 30. It looked like she was on her way to joining Julia, Cameron, and Sandra as a likable, bankable star.

And then...sheesh!

I won't get into Daredevil, which wasn't so bad before the TV show did it so much better, and I can even forgive her for the faltering Elektra since the idea of carrying a woman's superhero film had to sound appealing. Such a shame those involved didn't know how to carry it off in the other departments.

And then the most curious choices with scripts:

--Could Catch & Release have been even slightly better on paper? Kevin Smith used for pathos?
--Was the smarm missing from the script of Ghosts of Girlfriend's Past or did McConnaughey bring it?
--Arthur barely cut it the first time and coasted on the charm of Dudley Moore, so who was clamoring for a remake?
--Butter?!! Seriously! This was the first production from her own company?
--The Odd Life of Timothy Green, with a boy who has vines nauseatingly sprouting from his shins
--The abominable Men, Women, and Children?

Sprinkled throughout are good to great movies that include Juno, The Kingdom, The Invention of Lying, Dallas Buyer's Club, Draft Day, Alexander and...Day, and Danny Collins, all supporting roles, not one of which requiring an actress of Garner's talent and charisma to play her roles. Throw a dart at any TV Guide and any name you hit could have been in those roles and the films wouldn't have missed a beat.

Yes, I know, before anyone says (and I just know someone will STILL say it), she has been focusing on her family, to which I say the more power to her. It's clear she's been getting little help in that department.

But who in their right mind would have chosen this Miracles from Heaven schlock? It's like she's made a deal with her kids to make movies they can see as a mea culpa for Juno and Dallas Buyer's Club.

I can think of so many books and famous women Garner could be playing if she would do an ounce of homework. What the hell is her management doing? They seem to think she just needs to take work regardless of the project.

I hate seeing this great actress go to waste. She deserves better, but, also, she needs to do better.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but she was never that great to begin with. Her fans really overrate her. This is coming from a non-ALIAS fan (i think i watched half of an episode one time), but in the movies i've seen her in she does absolutely nothing for me. She has a bordering-on-mannish look to her features which i don't find attractive at all, and a lack of screen presence.

Add on the aura of superiority she gave off anytime she showed up alongside her Hubbie Ben Affleck and i just saw a complete lack of appeal.

I'll be honest... it doesn't surprise me that she has now stooped to shlock like this. Splitting from Affleck is really going to hurt her career.

What's happening with Garner is what happens with the great majority of actresses (and many actors as well) - most actors work their butts of for 8-10 years, to enjoy a 2-4 year stretch of A-list roles or television, and then are replaced culturally by the "new flavor" … it is not at all uncommon to see yesterdays top stars in today's Hallmark, Lifetime, and "straight-to-video" releases..

You make a very good point. Today, A-list; tomorrow, direct-to-DVD purgatory.

Can I please know that we do not live on the same planet, otherwise I will have to jump off of it.

I never considered her a good actor. An adorable presence on screen, no doubt.
Like all mediocre performers, she's lost some of her star power. It was inevitable.

She was great in 13 going on 30, maybe you missed that film, or is the one you are referring to as one of her best , no idea .

Does she have to be 'great' to entertain ? Of course not.

Are you saying this movie is so bad that casting her in it, proves her loss of 'star power' ?

My if so, I feel sorry for you.

reply

Disagree, doing this move showed her range. Well done Jennifer

I enjoy her a lot in this and others. I think that my little cutie pie Jenny (sorry, BEN! she is cute!) chose this religious film and a Texas setting both since she IS from Texas, y'all.

Great film. Kylie Rogers may become the next beloved Kylie since Kylie Minogue came 30 years ago from down under. The other upcoming kid actors were good too..and Queen Latifah as well.

Amanda Bynes is hot and Lindsay Lohan is not.

I liken her to Billy Zane. People vastly overrated him because he too was awfully pretty to look at.

Anybody who thinks Garner was some sort of awesome actress is obviously blinded by fan love. She was pretty and adequate.

Zane too was given a super hero movie and it failed.

He'll now show up and be in your cam shot movie if you provide bus fair and a decent buffet.

Now hold on a minute there, Mister (or Ma'am)... Seriously, the original Arthur didn't coast on anything: it had a great script, the chemistry of Dudley Moore and Liza Minelli, AND the absolutely wonderful (and Oscra-winning) performance of Sir John Gielgud (spelling?). And the title song wasn't too bad, either, was it?

Other than thtat, I agree with everything you said: Jennifer Garner was pretty great, until she wasn't.
