Story Line Questions (spoilers)

This movie was good as far as the filming and the quick scene changes. But there seemed to be a few gaps in the story so I ask if anyone can clarify.

1. What was the past traumas Chloe was supposed to be suppressing?

2. Chloe was dreaming about missing friend Rebecca. There were photographs of her and Chloe together. Rebecca's mother had reported her missing. How long had she been missing?

3. If the answer to question 2 does not make it a cold case, how come the cops did not go out and search the area near the bridge when Chloe presented her drawings?

4. Why did Chloe have a busted lip and maybe beat up when Cody almost hit her on the bridge before he took her to the hospital?

5. Why was Cody out at the bridge area digging holes and setting metal posts?

6. The bad guy kinda looked like Woody Harrelson in a bar scene where he asked Cody if he had found his missing girlfriend. Was biker asking about Rebecca or Chloe?

If the answer to question 6 is Rebecca, then that explains that Chloe was used as a medium to solve a murder and bring closure to Cody and Rebecca's mother (who didn't seem to be grieving). It explains why Cody was crying and knocked the stuff off his desk. There were no English subtitles on the copy I watched. I rated it a 7/10 because I could watch it a 2nd time for clarification. If the answers are not in the film then I would rate it a 5 because plot is ambiguous.

Hey, there weren't any pictures of Chloe and Rebecca. Chloe was young when she met Rebecca, guessing 8-10 yrs old. The woman in the pictures is Lola, she still works at the diner but has shorter hair now.

Chloe wasn't acting as a medium. As a child she witnessed the murder of Rebecca and had suppressed the memory. She used to go to the spot by the bridge where they show all the art when she was younger to feel safe when her mother was out of town especially. I got the impression that she was molested by some of her mother's boyfriends.

Anyway, these traumatic events manifested themselves into what she referred to as blackouts. It was during this time that she busted her lip. She had a panic attack of sorts when her thoughts were triggered and she started remembering Rebecca's murder. This is also when she would write "Lost Soul" over everything - she was remembering his tattoo.

The Josh character's were separate from Chloe's. His girlfriend / maybe wife - don't really know - got sick when they were over seas helping people on a church mission. He felt guilty and blamed himself bc she didn't really want to go. So he distracted himself by helping Chloe until he was ready to help himself. Make sense?

Thank you for your detailed explanation. For some reason I did not get the imdb notification as I should have back when you wrote it. I just happened to be reviewing my 2016 movie list and found your reply today. It was very helpful.

I didn't feel any of this was left unsaid! You mention subtitles, was English not your first language? (Meaning, if not, I could see how all of these things were missed. Listening to a movie in your non-native language would make you miss things).

1) The past trauma Chloe was suppressing was witnessing Rebecca get murdered. That's when the blackouts started. It's true that her mother's boyfriends were molesting her, as well, but she seemed to remember that on her own (so, not suppressed).

2) There were not photographs of Chloe and Rebecca together. The blonde in the photo with Rebecca was the waitress at the diner, not Chloe. I can't exactly remember how long she'd been missing...12 years I think the cop said? Maybe 10? He says it when he first tells Chloe that Rebecca has been missing.

3) They did not search the area because they wrote off Rebecca's disappearance as a runaway, given her troubled foster care background. They probably had no idea the bridge was even involved.

4) Chloe blacked out and messed up her art studio, tipping over paint and other crap. I assume she busted her lip during that time. Not beat up.

5) Cody was digging and setting metal posts because he was trying to find Rebecca's body. Chloe had recently told him that Rebecca was murdered there. Cody told the cop and asked him to search the area for her body; the cop said no. So Cody took it upon himself to start digging for her body.

6) I don't remember a sketchy guy at a bar asking for a girlfriend, sorry. I remember the guy who turned out to be the murderer working at the diner...?

Thank you, blacknyellowsquid, for writing to help explain the plot questions I had nearly a year ago.

Concerning my subtitles issue you wrote:

The rental DVD only had Spanish subtitles. I don't know where the local rental store gets their copies. It was on their new release wall when I rented it and was rated 7.3 at the time. I see that it is down to 5.5 now.

Sometimes their DVDs don't have subtitles at all. Sometimes they don't have scene selections on the menu, just play movie, which makes it hard to stop and restart to finish later. In this case, the amount or quality of volume was poor, not my comprehension skills. I rely on subtitles to help (going back and replaying parts of a scene) when there is whispery dialog in a film as well.

When all else fails, I ask for help on the chat boards. Thanks again.
