Any thoughts on why they had that flash to Miranda in Mike's lap with her eyes open right before he screeches to a halt?

I think her death made him realise how precious life is and that his hadn't even begun yet. She died young and in tragic circumstances which made him realise how selfish he was by refusing to have the operation that would save his life.
