Pathetic to see all these haters who just don't understand this movie...

I saw this movie during its limited run in theaters. It's brilliant. Great blend of heavy social commentary and 90s action homage. If you don't understand this movie, then obviously you are the audience that crappy direct-to-video producers target with their low quality action movies.

This is obviously a huge step up for independent action films. The direction, the writing, the ACTION - all awesome. Especially for a low-budget movie.

All the people giving a movie like THIS 1 star? Are you kidding me? All you're doing is trying to hurt a quality little film because you're sad that you never did anything with your lives.

1 star indicates terrible filmmaking, terrible execution, terrible everything. You wanna know what a 1 star movie is? Anything starring Steven Seagal in the last 15 years. This is at LEAST a 6 or 7, but probably an 8.

People rating this a 1 star should be ashamed of themselves.

reply

I CONCUR. I just noticed this. I caught this right as the VOD dropped. It's AWESOME. And then I saw the IMDB rating suddenly dropping from 8.1 to 6.0 --- I call BS. Haters are a joke. Rate the movie fairly, morons.

reply

I've yet to see it, about to in a few minutes, but if you're suggesting that this lower budget film deserves an 8+ rating I think you don't have a very solid grasp of what the average rating for a good film is on here. A 6/10 is a solid score for a film of this nature.

It starts at an 8.1/10 because all of it's initial voters were cast, crew, family and friends and it then balances out as unbiased viewers give honest opinions, it's the way it goes for every film.

reply

Unbiased honest opinions? LOL. That's not how IMDB works. People here will down vote a movie out of spite. I bet most of these 1 votes are either morons who don't see all the layers in this movie and don't get the 90s action elements, OR they're wannabe filmmakers that want to tear an indie filmmaker down.

I saw it. I loved it. Is it perfect? No way. But a low-budget film is not relegated to a 6 rating just because it's small.

Come back here when you're done and tell me your rating. I would be SHOCKED if you gave this thing anything under a 6.

reply

I will surely come back and leave a completely honest, unbiased and fair evaluation and yes I do consider the fact that it's an Indie film and I do give extra credit for Indie flicks that overcome their budgetary restrictions and rise above in quality despite lacking in resources. I haven't looked at the voter breakdown yet, but if people are giving 1's that's unfortunate, most of the voters who are irregular like that don't even count in the end. Mine is in the Top1000 so mine does count. I try to vote as responsibly as possible.

Now I looked at the votes and I see the 22 1/10's that is pretty hateful, but the top1000 votes are good so far and I will add mine afterwards as I am truly interested in this film now. I can't imagine what would drive so many people to slam it with 1/10's, it's not like there are even user reviews posted giving it all shining 10/10's which sometimes makes people vote like that. Also since I started writing this the rating has dropped to 5.6/10 that was a quick drop ffs.

reply

Well i gave it a 7, reminded me A bit of the movie gamer the video game graphics were a bit dated. I especially Liked Azog! in it At first i did not understand his background how some computer/software engineer was kicking so much Butt, But then he mentioned he was in the military and served 2 tours so it fit into place.

reply

@Boudreaux76 This is your sole, one and only post on this site, so you're not in essence a true member for one and obviously involved with the film because if you were a true fan of cinema you would have had a history here so cry somewhere else about your film ffs. Leave the message boards for the viewers.

reply

I've been on IMDB for years my friend. I don't hop on message boards because I never had a reason to. When I saw all the BS surrounding the sudden rating drop, I had to say something.

Like I said - come back here when you watch the movie.

And no, I'm not involved in the movie. BUT, I do live in the city they shot the movie... I guess that makes me somehow biased towards it? Lol.

reply

Umm - I've also never posted on IMDB before. I guess that makes me the director's mom, right? LMAO. No, I just saw the movie, it stuck with me, and I went to rate it on imdb, and when i came back I saw all these haters hopping on it.

I'm not worried though. It should course correct once the more intelligent people start watching this thing. Get the haters out of the way.

This movie should balance out at a little over 7 when it's done. My prediction! :)

reply

Well you do see how one can come to such a conclusion if one does click your profile. If you were just extraordinarily moved by the film to post then sure it's plausible, I'll believe you.

Jeez though since my post a few minutes ago it's dropped to a 5.6/10 so it's not looking good, I'm going to quit typing and actually watch this thing so as to get a perspective.

reply

Hi, I'm actually the director of this movie. I come check out the boards every now and then to see how people are responding to a movie. IMDB can get... Colorful ;).

I've been enormously grateful of late for all the positive buzz this movie has garnered during its limited theatrical run from both critics and audiences, so I was prepared for a little hate when the movie dropped on Home Video ;).

I'd love to hear your thoughts on our little action flick once you're finished. I hope you enjoy it!

- Nicholas

reply

Hi there, good to meet you Nicholas, I'm 30 minutes in and this is an absolutely brilliant concept, I'm really digging the way in which everything is portrayed. I had to pause for a minute for a BR break and had to drop a few lines down on how fresh and original this is so far, blending from a number of different platforms and ideas from some current types of film and video game types of FPS. I will most likely give this a review afterwards, but first on to the rest of the film!

reply

Wow thanks so much for the kind words! It means a lot. Hope you enjoy the rest of it! :)

reply

Hi there Nicholas I am glad to see you aren't letting all the nasty people on the internet who just like to troll getting you down. I love indie films and hopefully oneday would like to make a low budget indie film myself from one of my books i am writing. I enjoyed your movie it was a great attempt in a difficult genre. I am very curious in what sort of budget you had to work with for the movie as I wont have very much myself to work with. I was also curious how you did the cgi scenes in beta test my guess was some sort of film to cgi filter software. I think it is great that you are interacting with the public, please feel free to message me the answers if you prefer. I look forward to seeing more of your work. regards, glen.

reply

Hi Glen, I'm glad you found some things to enjoy in it...

Regarding budget it was a little under 2 million.

The game scenes were designed in the unreal gaming engine. They weren't animated scenes, but actually designed video game sequences. A lot of the budget went to creating those scenes, and the cast.

reply

Hi Nicholas! Thank you so much for this movie. I had read some reviews before watching so I had a feeling this would be up my alley, and I was right. Great depth while capturing the spirit of 90s action movies. I saw a couple bad reviews out there and it's so clear that they just didn't get it! One guy was complaining about the acting by Zane, and I'm like - THAT'S THE POINT! He's a 90s henchman!

Anyway, I'm sure the score will course correct once the haters get it out of their system. There is NO WAY this movie deserves a 1 star. Even if you're tearing it apart it's still better than pretty much any indie action movie out there!

So don't let these morons get you down. You made a great little movie! I'm definitely going back to check out your other stuff, and can't wait to see where you go!

reply

It's possible that the "1" votes are intended to balance out the "8.1" stars that the film started out having. I personally don't believe in this type of voting but people do it apparently.

If I'm giving this a fair and impartial assessment then I give it a 4. Maybe a 5, but only in order to support the indie type film industry. The overall question I use to assess my rating is, "Did I enjoy watching this?" or maybe more accurately, "Was this movie good?" It's immaterial that it's an indie film or low budget based on that question. My criticisms (as amateurish as they are) are intended to offer Nicholas some insight or thoughts on how to improve, not to slam the film for my own sake.

That said, if the film's intentions were to mirror or pay homage to 90's video game FPSes then I might rate it a 6 or 7, but there was nothing in the synopsis that indicated that and this leaves those of us who "don't understand this movie" feeling disappointed and cheated by what to expect.

I saw a lot that could be improved upon. The story was one of the best parts and by "story" I mean the overall concept of the movie. The script itself (meaning the flow of the story and the focus on the characters and even the way things were told through the scenes) had some big flaws, or at least many things I would have done differently. First, I would have made it unclear that Larenz Tate's character had control of a live human. I would have started with Manu Bennett's character being abducted and taken somewhere dark and non-descript and hinted at people doing "something" to him. Then bring in Max as a bright, unassuming video gamer testing some new beta game to contrast the nefarious abduction a moment ago. Really show him getting into the game and getting a thrill from it but as the script did, show him seeing the newscast about the bank and wondering in shock and horror if he was responsible and maybe even have him test his assumption to validate his guess. I'm getting a bit too specific here but I expected to see more credible actions from the characters. The other half of it is the ridiculous reasoning of the antagonists. A handful of armed military guys loitering in the front lawn of Max's house didn't raise any eyebrows? A guy in an office cubicle gets his head blown off and none of his co-workers run for the doors? They decide not to shoot Creed as he enters the building because...???

The action sequences were just as unrealistic, however this was the only clue I had to indicate that it was mirroring a video game. The idle minion thugs waiting for their turn to attack Creed while he's surrounded, followed by the tougher leader minion waving them off while the mini boss battle begins was classic drone A.I. mimicry.

I would have used different camera direction as well. More close-ups during emotional scenes and less static camera shots during action sequences. The lighting was also consistently bright and could have used more variety to give different moods or implications. The editing was pretty good actually and the blend of shots to make up a scene seemed practiced.

That said, for a throw-back to 90's FPS games it was good but for a film that wanted any sense of realism it just failed to deliver.

reply

Thanks for the insight. The entire film is meant as an homage to the 90s and 90s action films, with 21st century themes thrown in for good measure.

I didn't disguise the truth of what Max was doing specifically because I wanted the audience to think about how much we take the violence in video games for granted. When Max laughs as he takes out men in the bank, an audience member could reflect on their own experiences passively flipping through channels as bombs are dropped on the news, or someone is assaulted in their neighborhood. We've been desensitized by violence as a culture, and cluing in the audience to that early allows for some small reflection on that.

I also trust in an audience to be intelligent. And an intelligent audience would put it together very quickly that Max is controlling someone. No iteration of the script where I even considered that did it seem plausible to keep that "twist" working for more than a couple minutes, so I abandoned it in favor of cultural reflection.

The action sequences, the over-the-top henchmen, the one-liners, and even the style of fighting was all meant to be an homage to the action films I grew up on.

Whether or not that raises the score in your mind I leave to you, but I certainly made the film I wanted to make, the story telling and structure were all deliberate, and I'm grateful for all the positive reviews and attention the movie has received so far. Thanks for watching! :)

@MirrorImagesLTD

Its cool that you are engaging with the viewers. Please accept my comments only as positive criticism.

The relationship between Tech Support and the Player was good but it needed more depth, and there should have been a bit more banter or references to what Tech Support does for him.

Right before the Player started the game TS should have informed him that it was a 100% perma-death gaming experience; meaning once you die you never get to play ever again, no quick saves/loads, no swapping consoles/logins, none of that. You die, your character dies and the game deletes itself. This is enforced by a new type of gaming peripheral/chip. Because this is just a Beta Test, or prototype, the chip is not yet sub-dermal, so it would fit on the Player's nail or wrist. A Player cannot play without a chip and the chip cannot be modified, of course it can but that could have disastrous results, such as your Avatar being all FUBAR, something that could come into play later.

Then TS could have mentioned that civilian deaths were....discouraged. I get you were trying to approach a few topical subjects such as gun control and our ever growing acceptance of a violence "where its necessary" mentality, which I applaud to some extent. But I feel the world you were trying to portray needed more dark commentary. So rather then Tech Support saying not to kill civi's, she says its "discouraged"...after a short pause. As if she is looking for the right words/justification (perhaps looking for instruction from an unseen antagonist, this is left to the viewers imagination), simultaneously acknowledging her disassociation from the event and that even Tech Support might find some humor in the Player's situation. Initially this woould not appear to suspicaious but upon later viewing it would be apparent that this was foreshadowing her deceit.

I'm not saying this would be the best way, but this would be an alternative method to leaving the TV on in the background in he kitchen where he couldn't even see it? I don't see why he would leave it on while gaming and on the speaker-phone, that felt a little sloppy.

As a fellow gamer & modder myself I was intrigued by the initial concept of illegal modding, or however it was phrased. Just the concept alone reminded me again of the Matrix & Johnny Mnemonic. I would have preferred to see some simple yet effective mods such as a soft mod that temporarily alters the console system's BIOS, or manipulation of a save file, or even some Real Time editing, but given the nature of the remote control mechanism you had in place I can see why some of that would not work. GPS manipulation could have served multiple purposes.

It wasn't too heavy handed in its execution which I did appreciate, though there was a little redundancy. The wife character should have been given a bit more dialogue, she didn't seem like she had much to work with.

The whole leaving the one henchman alive thing was slightly annoying, especially when we see him holding the gun to Player's head later. And then he just lets Player drive his new Avatar up to the house...I mean, I know the henchman had his orders but that didn't really make sense. A better henchman would have at least pistol whipped the Player into compliance, which could have knocked the controller/batteries free and created an interesting battle for control.

The fight scenes were pretty good, the main Avatar the Player was controlling. He would have made a much better Frank Castle then the guy they went with in Netflix's Dare Devil series. So good casting getting him to play that part, however, how many programmer's of that level are that badass right?

"This is What You Want... This is What You Get"

reply

Hey thanks for your insight. Some cool ideas there, but again my goal with this was to homage a 90s action film from the ground up. That includes all the cliches and tropes those films had.

Regarding Tech Support, I wanted her to be friendly and human and on "Max's side". She's like that tomboy in school with a secret crush on her best guy friend. Making her more clinical, I think, would have hurt that relationship rather than built on it.

In terms of the sci-fi tech, I wanted it to be as simple as possible to not convolute a narrative with dense social themes by introducing too much technical mythology. Especially in a low budget film when each piece of tech is costly, simplifying things was the smarter approach.

Finally, regarding the henchmen left alive. That was the point! How many James Bond movies do we see that in! It's a classic 90s hero mistake. All these elements are little winks at the audience that we stitch together by taking the world seriously and the narrative seriously.

You'll notice that Kincaid even references monologues and evil traps and all the tropes of a villain waiting in his lair.

The movie is pretty much Mario going to save Princess Peach from Bowser's castle. :)

In the end I'm glad you found some things to enjoy in it. Thanks so much for checking it out!

reply

It's nice to see that in your expertise film making, you would have had such tweaks after coming up with such a concept.

It sucks when people pick apart unique, different movies like this.

Sure I thought the main henchman was cheesy, and could complain about the main guy taking out like 30 guys at the end, but the whole idea was so much different than all the re-treads you see in theaters today that it was refreshing.

reply

A 1 is harsh obviously for most films..

It seems they wanted to pay homage to the cheesey dated movies from the 90's, presumably tv movies and if by pay homage means recreating the same dated cheesey movie then they succeeded. But its probably going to be voted on the fact that it looks like a dated cheesey movie rather than the 'concept' which is kinda how it should be, perhaps then this would have been better as a book :D

reply

So basically because a bunch of people are too dumb to understand what the filmmakers were going for, they are voting it a 1.... yeah we know. No it doesn't mean it would have been better as a book. It means stupid people should not watch this movie. Seriously giving me a headache seeing how many DUMB people are out there rating this a 1.

reply

Everyone should be giving it 1,until it goes down to the 3 or 4 it deserves.

This is blatant rating manipulation by the producers of the movie and I see this all the time for shady indy movies.

IMDB should figure out how to automate stopping this nonsense.

This movie SHOULD NOT have a rating higher than Bloodsport, Con Air and Bad Boys!

reply

Hey moron - You know what rating manipulation is? VOTING A MOVIE ONE STAR TO HURT ITS SCORE.

JUST FACE REALITY. YOU DID NOT GET THE MOVIE AND MANY MANY PEOPLE ARE LIKING THIS INDIE FILM. YOU MORONS ARE CRAZY! GET A LIFE!

reply

Hi Mike,

As the director of this movie, I can confirm that once we had our film premiere I asked a core group of people to rate the movie. The number was around 50 or so. All votes after that are all people who have voted because they wanted to. To me the numbers are very exciting. They show that while a small group really doesn't like the film, the overwhelming majority seems to really get what I was going for, and really appreciate the social themes I tried to play with, as well as the 90s action throwback nature of the movie.

Thanks for watching and I'm sorry you didn't connect with the film. Hopefully I make something more to your liking in the future!

Nicholas

reply

Except, it was down to 5.6 at one point, and has come back up, so ALL the votes are not being counted.

The review I wrote was also censored.

Nice job admitting to vote rigging.

Just ridiculous and unethical behaviour.

reply

From my understanding in reading your posts, the only vote rigging happening here is coming from you and others who are choosing to vote a "1 star" in order to hurt this film's overall score.

I'm not sure exactly how IMDB would not count votes. From last look there are over 1800 votes and they seem to all be counted.

What I did was ask a small group to vote. I did not tell them what to vote. This small group voted during the film's limited theatrical release. During that two week limited run the film only had around 80 votes. After it was released on home video people began to see it more widely, which is when the 1800 votes started rolling in.

What you're claiming would involve me or someone in my camp conspiring against you and a minority of voters through IMDB. IMDB doesn't work like that. You can barely even contact them directly if you try. So while the conspiracy is certainly entertaining, it's not reality.

The reality is, the film dropped on home video on August 2nd. It hit torrenting sites very quickly. Immediately upon reaching these sites, the film started receiving one star votes from a small but vocal group who severely disliked the film. Simultaneously, other audiences were discovering the film through VOD, DVD, Cable, and also torrents, and those votes began to roll in as well.

I did see the score drop down to 5.6 temporarily, and I can only assume it's because the small vocal group with negative opinions acted faster than the majority who appreciated the film.

I'm sorry you didn't like the film. I'm sorry anyone doesn't like the film. But there is no conspiracy here. The reality is- more people like it than don't. Please move on.

reply

I don't even know why you feel compelled to respond to this mike ajw (I think that stands for a jack wad or something) but you are a better man than me.

Keep up the good work and bring us some new stuff. Nice to see Manu Bennett as well..loved him in Spartacus.

reply

Lol, I just try to clear the air whenever someone is trying to point fingers and claim shady things are happening. I guess I just care too much about what people think at this point in my career. Here's hoping I just get ridiculously rich and famous and won't care anymore! ;). Thanks so much for the kind words... I'm already hard at work on the next movie.

reply

Yeah this vote distribution looks super legit:

http://imgur.com/a/L82uo

I'm sure it was your deep female characters and interactions that really affected the 300+ women who all gave it 9/10.

reply

Can't wait to see your next movie. I'm guessing I'll be waiting a while. Also interesting you've never posted a message board post on another movie. If anything doesn't seem completely legit, it's you.

reply

I assume you're referring to "Mike" as not legit?... I'm pretty sure I've posted on forums for my previous films before. Maybe those posts were deleted somehow? Anyway - the next one should be out in 2018... Follow me on Facebook if you're curious for updates :)

reply

Yes, are you not looking at this in embedded view? I am responding to the guy being negative and trollish, not you.

reply

You caught me. I got 300 women to conspire with me and the corporation of IMDB to rig the score for this little movie that means so much to them. Thanks for watching ;).

And I thought you were just a terrible director.

Too stupid to even understand sarcasm or how online astroturfing works.

Hope your daddy's money takes you far.

Just watched this and loved it. Some parts were just hilarious, The Room level bad (the Newscaster with his mustache and off the cuff commentary) and others were Shoot 'em Up level awesome satire of the genre. The only bits that I didn't enjoy were the really long exposition interviews, but I can live with that.

reply

Hey I'm glad you could find things to enjoy in it! And so happy you could see the satire :). It's funny, even my lead actor didn't like the news anchor at first and then he watched it a second time and said, "wait a minute, you're satirizing Geraldo Rivera, aren't you?" As soon as he saw that I think the mustache played much better for him. If you ever see it again, let me know if that helps :).

I know the interview at the beginning was a bit long. That was most definitely a budget limitation issue. I needed to set up the world in an inexpensive way, and the more traditional route of a montage would have been pretty expensive. Every penny counts in a movie like this, so I decided instead to create an interview that gives you the information you need before the story really gets in motion.

reply

It's amusing that you think a video game movie is so esoteric that most viewers won't understand it, and in their frustrated rage over their own stupidity will lash out by under rating the film.

5 minutes in. The writing is making my teeth hurt.

I'll come back at the end to confirm whether this is actually brilliant or just teen boy fantasy.

-------

Returned.

There's good, there's bad, there's ugly.

Despite the fact that no beta tester will ever be the award-winning, pampered hero of any software company, the premise of this is rather clever. The editing and pacing is good once you get past the snooze-worthy opening.

The acting is far better than people realize (with a few notable exceptions). It's hard to tell because some of the dialogue is SO BAD it makes the actors appear awkward. The fact that any of it comes across as believable gives evidence to the acting chops of those who had to deliver those lines (by the way, mister writer, when the news anchor says "you are as confused as we are" it's completely backwards. I couldn't let go of that for 20 minutes. WE ARE AS CONFUSED AS YOU ARE. Seriously. The opposite is not just rude, it's nonsensical. OK, that was probably one of the least ridiculous dialogue disasters, but for some reason it irked me. Most of the other dialogue is just awkward, forced, and would never occur in any normal conversation. "In the gamers lies our salvation!" Really? Come on. Take a class. Hire a script editor. You revere beta testers so you should respect feedback. Listen to it).

As far as the complexity of this corporation's actions, it's hilariously over the top, but kind of fun, and certainly this isn't the only film which requires the viewer to suspend disbelief. There are far easier and less expensive means of achieving these goals, vague and cabalistic as they are. What they do here enters a level of megalomania usually reserved for spy film satire. But hey. I'll go with it.

The action sequences looked to be choreographed by a teenaged boy. Impossible and mostly comedic. But somehow they fit within the tone of the film, so...ok. I liked when the "red spots" appeared in shirts before the shots were fired. Pretty amusing. Lines of bodies artfully arranged after the hero walks away were also quite funny. If necks actually broke as easily as they do in this film, we'd all be afraid to hug anyone. If I didn't know better, I would have sworn it was a spoof film. Having Danny Trejo play a Machete-esque version of Zane would have assured the comedic quality of the film, but as it is, I think we're supposed to take it seriously. Shame, really.

I really want to emphasize the excellence of the film editing. Bad editing is usually the killer of indie films, even more so than bad writing and acting. A good editor can make almost anything watchable, and it's the salvation of this film.

If you are a die-hard fan of gamer movies and hyperbolic action films, you won't hate this. It's not the worst movie ever made. But it is miles from brilliant. The OP of this thread is either the writer of his mother, who are the only two people on the planet who would find it so.

Movies are IQ tests; the IMDB boards are how people broadcast their score.

reply

Hi Kay,

As the writer and director of Beta Test, I can confirm that I did not start the thread in question. I am glad you found some things to enjoy in the film.

Also, my mother is fairly technologically challenged and has trouble adding attachments to e-mails, let alone creating IMDB accounts to troll message boards.

But I CAN confirm that my mother does indeed think Beta Test is brilliant... The writer just hopes people had fun ;).

Thanks for watching. I hope you didn't pirate it.
