Miracles with the ratings

It is truly amazing how the ratings for this movie keep getting saved. It comes out and almost goes below 5 and, whatdoyaknow, hundreds of female voters at once give it 9's and it bounces up to over 7! More moderate to negative votes come in, putting it below 7 and falling and, whatsdoyaknow, there's a sudden influx of hundreds of 10's! It's truly spectacular! I'm confident nobody associated with this film paid for dummy accounts to compensate for a critically-skewered movie!

If only miracles happened on Rotten Tomatoes and everywhere else!

You guys(and gals?) are hilarious.

I've been a supporter of this film since it came out. With the amount of conspiracy theorizing going on between the 100+ of you that hate this movie with such a passion that you will raise your fists in protest until it's destroyed, you would think the lot of you would actually love this movie about conspiracy theories!

No my son, I will tell you precisely what is happening here.

A majority of the people watching this film, believe it or not, like it. You can rant about Rotten Tomatoes and whatever else you want. Rotten Tomatoes doesn't even have a tomato score for the film. Why? Because only a select few recognized outlets even reviewed it. Many other smaller independent critics did review it, and most of them loved Beta Test.

See, I would bet big money that most of the vocal haters behind this film are not from the United States. I have no idea what this means, but it sure is interesting that most of the 1 votes are coming from the UK and abroad. Second, you'll notice that the earth has several timezones. Third you'll notice that most of the voting is coming from inside the USA. Since most people tend to watch movies around 6-10pm in the USA, they probably won't be rating a film until late that night, which would be a totally different voting time than most of the Non-US users.

This is not a studio film. Indie movie imdb scores fluctuate all the time! They go up, they go down, and up again. Why? Because there aren't countless thousands of people voting at once. There's a few hundred here, a few hundred there, and it all adds up to a few thousand when its said and done.

But most of these 1 votes are coming from abroad in very very small numbers compared to the other votes, at different times of day. And you guys are so passionate and so vocal and so angry that you'll vote hard and fast and tell all your buddies to hate the film too because its "so unfair" that a movie you hated isn't being hated by everyone.

I noticed the score drop rapidly once it hit VOD. That's because you foreigners pirated this movie as soon as it hit the torrent sites and voted before anyone in the US even had a chance to watch it. By that day there were already 30 or 40 1 star votes!

I couldn't believe my eyes that so many people just missed the point entirely with this movie. But here we are.
A number of you just didn't get the film. You just totally did not get it. I read some of these bogus reviews. You guys are comparing this to SyFy channel stuff. Are you totally insane? You have no idea what you're talking about if you really don't see the quality of this film compared to the stuff on SyFy.

So outside of all the people who are actually doing the right thing and renting this movie or buying this movie in the US - which is the only country the film is officially released in at this time, there are also big supporters like myself, who can't stand little weasels like yourself. So what do I do? I go and buy 100 copies of the DVD and I pass it around work with a note saying all you have to do is post about it on Facebook or rate it on imdb. So people like me who help a small film that deserves to be seen are going to do whatever they can to counteract the BS hate thrown around by haters like you who seek out to destroy.

The score is wonky because people vote at different times and at different rates in different countries and because its an indie film. Period.

For your sake I hope you have more going on in your life than to care so much about attacking a movie like this. Cheerio.

Director, did you forget to log out of your dummy account before replying? That is a nice little story, by the way, about an impossible proportion of 9 and 10 votes from one country and one demographic, after several days of declining ratings. Does this explain the 26% audience score on RT? Do you think you could pay someone to give you 11s next? Maybe someone from North Korea this time?

reply

Oh yes, anyone who loves an independent movie with some differing opinion must be the director or their father or their mother or their something, right? You guys are too funny.

Look at rotten tomatoes again, son. How many votes exactly from that viewer score? Exactly. Small films rarely get a true reading from those sites, especially in a case like Rotten tomatoes where a few viewers who didn't like it from the small theatrical release down voted it. Negative voices are always the loudest!

Keep those wheels turning! If you don't like the movie then leave your rating and your review and continue on in life!

It went down to 6.8, then there's another magical influx of hundreds of 9 and 10 votes overnight again! Again tell me about the target audience of teenage and 40 year-old women who like video games in the UK that all vote at once.

As I already said on another thread on this forum, many of you kids aren't understanding the real demographic that is attracted to this movie. Sure it is a movie about gaming, and also political and social messages, but the three lead actors have a huge female fanbase. Manu Bennett especially brings women out in droves to these fan conventions. Linden Ashby too.

Just look at the movie's twitter handle. Female fans are tweeting left and right how much they like the movie.

I've been checking in here almost daily since Beta Test was released and some days there are 100 new votes, some days there are 50 new votes, some days there are 30, 20, etc.

I was just at a convention and they were handing out Beta Test Dvds to people.

I think you should just go away and concentrate on doing something productive.

Hi there,

I haven't seen your film so won't comment on it or rate it. I am intrigued though by your line of argument, particularly the correlation between rating patterns and the methods by which viewers obtain a copy of a film, and I am wondering whether I understand you correctly. Are you suggesting that those who buy or rent the DVD generally like your film, whilst those who get it through other, possibly illegal or in any way immoral channels generally dislike it? If so, why do you think this to be the case?

reply

Oh, not my film. Just someone who really enjoyed and hate to see people trashing on an indie that I see plenty of people liking.

I don't know why certain people are voting what. The point I was making was that from what I can tell the movie has only so far been released legally in the USA. USA voters seem to like it more than voters from other countries. And most of the voting has come from the USA, where the movie has been legally released. That's all.

reply

I'm not sure what you mean by UK either. Most of the voting is happening in the US, and a majority of the total votes are even from men.

reply

Uh-oh, someone insulted your movie! Better log into your alternate account you created for The Penitent Man! ALT ACCOUNT TO THE RESCUE! DUN-DUN-DUNNNNNN!!!

reply

Haven't seen The Penitent Man yet, but I will.

You're kind of sounding a little crazy with this conspiracy stuff. The more you lash out about fixed ratings and fake accounts the more you sound like a bitter failed filmmaker who's jealous of someone who got a movie made.

I hope you realize it just makes you sound like a tool. Go do something productive!
