Surprised at the low rating, it's a very unique & beautiful film

Why the low rating? It was amazing and surrealist. Not just a sports or dancing film. More about the inner world of growing up. Loved it.

If it was made by an Asian director it would have a really high rating.

reply

Why?

reply

Because asian movies here get high ratings regardless of quality.

You should be in advertising.

I really hope this delusive comment was just a joke.

Otherwise, it's up there with some of the most ludicrous comments I've ever seen on this forum.

Guy movies always rate much higher on IMDB.

I loved it too but a film this lyrical demands more focus than conventional moviegoers can give.

Although you'd think that the limited release would eliminate some of the average moviegoer crowd that would be less receptive to it.

Lots of independent movies and movies made by women have lower ratings on imdb, because they dont fit into the narrative of the imdb fanboys who only see Marvel and their heroes as the ultimate cinema. Or random blockbusters with their favorite "stars". I have seen SO many movies (that i absolutely loved and even considered some a masterpiece) that have ratings even way below 6 that i gave up on the credibility and relevance of an imdb rating a long time ago. Its totally USELESS. Not that i trust RT that much either, even the critics can get it wrong (many of them are the same fanboys). Complex cinema, cinema about minorities, cinema about social justice coming from outsiders, sexually provocative cinema, anything seriously philosophical automatically gets a lower rating here (compare that to almost ANY Marvel movie that has 8.x, or 7.x minimum). Sad but true...

It's da hype. These movies you mentioned have huge budgets and they're getting high ratings because they're very desperate for those, hoping to bring the cash back in in order to repeat the whole process. You can say they're boring mandalas or epically-sized yet bland pointilism paintings. You can be very successful with something like that as an 'artist' in our times.

There's an Italian saying: Times are hard, but modern.

Anyway, at least the ratings pointed me towards this film! I expect it to live in the vicinity of a Beasts of the Southern Wild? Maybe I should start rating films. I honestly didn't ever even contemplate it.

I thought it was good too. Very original and strangely captivating. It's only got 304 votes though, it's still too early to judge its rating. That said, it does have its negatives like sup-par acting and dialogue at times, but a score in the low 7's would still be more fitting than the current rating.

This is not a film that I would surprised by a low rating. I would expect critics to love it, film buffs to be okay with it and for your average audience to have mixed-to-negative reactions to it. I personally found it trying on my patience. 30 minutes into the film and not a single compelling thing happened. To me, it never answered the question of why I should really give a damn.

This movie is indy filmaking 101. Show as little as possible be as ambiguous as possible and let the audience fill in the blanks with their own interpretation. They'll like their own interpretation better than any answer you can give them so by default they call the movie genius, unique, and original. Slow pacing, long pensive stars of longing or desire let the audience project themselves as much as possible. By the end any review will become an exercise in self gratification as the reviewer will be reviewing their own interpretation of the story they came up with.

I think the rating is quite high for this film. Felt like the longest 70 minutes of my life.
