Geniuses? Nope

I am thinking — with both seasons of this show, are these kids REALLY the smartest ones they could find in all of America? Seriously?! Or do the truly smart kids choose to eschew reality TV altogether?

reply

I think the kids are all members of MENSA, which honestly has pretty low standards for scores, about the same as the qualifications to get into gifted classes at school.

reply

Yeah, you know, having a relatively high IQ score really does not equal true genius. True genius is extremely rare -- true genius is what tends to change a social, economic, technological, etc., landscape, not a bunch of kids with pushy upper-middle-class parents who kind of "test well." I don't see any of these kids thinking outside the box or being real disruptors of any particular space.

It could be too early to tell with a few of them, and some are more impressive than others (I see a little something in Chance, for instance). But kids like Blake and Jenna? Genius?! Good Lord, no.

reply

Agreed.

reply

But, you know, it's a TV show. Entertainment, nothing more.

Most true genius disruptor kids are probably not going to be on a reality show.

reply

These kids are "bright". They stick out like a sore thumb and foster jealousy, resentment, and ridicule from their "dull" classmates. The "brilliant" kids know how to blend in. The ones smarter than these kids are hiding in plain sight. They are too smart to be picked out and paraded like dancing monkeys
