Serious Mistake in the 'Advanced' Math Round

Not only was this not "advanced math" on a college level, as the Mensa rep had claimed it would be, but Chancellor CLEARLY got one problem wrong when he said that -17 X -19 was a -323. Do none of these super smart kids OR the judges know that, when you multiply two negatives, you get a positive?!!! That's a serious outrage. I hope it was just an editing problem, as they didn't show them ASKING the question and just had it up on the screen as he gave his answer. Perhaps it was the TV producers who didn't realize this. ;) Let's hope! Otherwise, we may be doomed as a nation if this is what passes for young genius now. Yikes!

reply

Good eye! It appears to be an on-screen typo. Fortunately, it could not have changed the results, because even if Chancellor scored one less, he would still have beaten Jaden by one point.

reply

I hope that's all it was, otherwise I would fear for everyone in this group, particularly the judges! The point wouldn't even be that he would have beaten Jaden -- it would have been that no one there knows anything about math!!

reply

I already wrote this in response to another thread- I was very surprised the questions given were considered advanced math. I thought they were way too basic and easy for children with a supposed genius IQ. There should have been some algebra and geometry in there.

reply

It wasn't advanced math at all -- there were simple division and subtraction questions included in the mix! And square roots, cube roots, etc? That's middle school stuff, even later elementary school stuff, from what I recall.

That Mensa woman made a fool of herself by calling it college-level math. More evidence of what a useless organization Mensa is?

reply

I noticed that but I didn't pay much attention to it and by the time the show ended I forgot about it. I still have it on my dvr so I want to go back and see it again. I do hope it was editing. If we all noticed it, you KNOW it didn't get past some of those crazy parents. I'm sure they are not only listening out for every correct answer their child gives, but any wrong answer another child gives! Someone would have pointed that out.

reply

Yeah, you don't hear them ask it -- just see it on the screen and hear his answer. So it HAS to be a production typo, right?!

Question and answer were correct. Post production on screen graphics error.

Thanks for that, IrisJ! I re-watched and it was exactly as everyone here said. I'm glad to know they owned up to their mistake - or at least Leland did. I like him, what little bit I've seen of him on screen.
