I don't get the Claire hate

I was a gifted child and I always put a ton of pressure on myself to be perfect. I remember crying over bad grades or when I had a bad performance at the "whiz kids" completions I used to do. Although I think this show is more about memorizing a fact sheet than actual knowledge but that's another post. A lot of people criticize her for smirking which I don't treacle sed but if any child is going to be singled out it's definitely Adrian. It upsets me. and this will get a lot of hate but I think it's Claire over Adrian because she's a girl and there is a double standard with females and competition. And at the end of the day that's what this is...a competition.

reply

Clare smirks and gloats. I've never once seen Adrien do either. It has nothing to do with gender.

reply

Then you should watch the last episode because he did it a lot. Even had close ups. But I guess some people only choose what they wish to see.

reply

Sounds like YOU choose what you wish to see.

reply

If you're content being ignorant there really isn't much more for me to say.

reply

I did watch the last episode, and he neither smirked nor gloated. He did cry a little when he performed badly in the one round, but normally he seems to be a very upbeat kid. And for the record, I doubt anyone hates Claire. People may dislike her attitude sometimes, but she's a little kid, why would anyone hate on a child.

reply

Are you guys that dumb? Production clearly picks out a smirk from any time in the competition and inserts it into whatever spot in the episode they want.

I remember in that one episode where Claire didn't place in the Top 3 (not the recent one), Adrian was announced as the winner and they showed Claire "rolling her eyes" or whatever. One second later, the camera shows the entire audience/cast and you can clearly see Claire clapping.

I must be the only one who watches reality TV regularly to know this...

reply

^ exactly this - they edit it to "brand" the contestants as the "mean one" or "crybaby", etc. This is a hallmark of reality shows and I have no idea how people don't get that yet.

The pressure is getting tougher and tougher every week. This is starting to show on the parents who really want their kids to win and the kids who have invested a lot of time in this. Everybody's worst flaws are coming to the surface. I did see this girl Claire make faces at the other contestants, I don't think that is manufactured. Last year another little girl who looked very similar to Claire also did that same thing. It's kind of a trait I guess that goes with being very achievement oriented.

These are smart kids and smart parents and as it gets closer to the end they all realize that only one kid can win. Of course they hope it's their kid but realistically it might not be and so everyone is very tense and expecting the inevitable let down when they have to leave the show. I don't know who is going to win .Each of the kids has some strengths and weaknesses so I guess we just have to see what happens.

What girl looked very similar to Claire last season?

Or it's kind of a trait that EVERY reality TV show has--manufacturing drama? LOL.

Its not the making faces thats "manufactured" - its how they edit to to show you that. If they didn't train the camera on certain contestants (or possibly even edit in smirks from different time periods) the audience would not have the particular reactions we do. That said, Claire's face does display that smug expression quite a bit.

Okay, I love Adrian, and I've picked him for the win, but yes...he did have a smirk when someone else got a wrong answer in the last episode. Granted it was probably just a production manipulation, but I did see it. He smirked, rolled his eyes, and looked over at his parents.

reply

Adrian is almost as annoying as Claire. Adrian will not always have a perfect ten. And Claire should have went home not Vivek. I'm tired of both Adrian and Claire's smirking. They need to be taught how to be good players.

reply

I agree with shoopies. Both of these kids are always smirking. I was hoping for Vivek to make it this past week.

reply

All of the kids smile and are happy when they do well. I think smiling when someone scores badly is an involuntarily response if it means they'll go home instead if you. Adult contestants do this all the time on "Chopped." If adults are unable to hide their responses then how do we expect kids to.

reply

That is true, kathy. It does come across as bad sportsmanship, but it is an automatic response.

reply

And these poor kids who do put a lot of pressure on themselves have to constantly hear from their parents about the money, the money, the money. This must be mentioned by each parent at least six to eight times in the last

show. The kids really don't conceptualize how much money that is or what that will do but the parents do and I think they are really pushing their kids way beyond what is fair and sane for these kids. The kids will do fine with or without the money but the parents seem to be a little too interested in getting their hands on that $100,000.
