So like, his mom was psychic?

She apparently knew "He would not be ready for this" the moment she heard the master copy of Nevermind. Nobody anticipated in not even the record label, they only printed like 50 000 copies.

reply

I didn't believe her. Could have been telling the truth, but that was the first thing I thought.

reply

I had the same thought. See seemed very disingenuous throughout the documentary. Even her little "are you addicted to the needle prick" comment near the end of the documentary seemed off.

reply

The needle prick comment stood out to me too, couldn't say what was weird about that, but something was off.

reply

Didn't believe that story either. You could tell she was exaggerating

reply

Of course it's *beep* She makes stuff up to look better.
Like she knew Nevermind would be a big deal. Like she knew about rock. Like she knew her son's potential. Like she cared about him.

She said she "felt fear" when she heard Nevermind. Sure, sure. She could have felt "fear" when her boy was in a bad spot as a child/teenager and when he needed her, when he needed parents, and when nobody wanted him. Neglect your child, it's not like he's not gonna be impacted by this all his life, especially when his father does the same!

So now that he's dead, she was a great mom to him. Sure. It's not like Kurt's gonna say otherwise...

Also, "Aberdeen is a great place, kids loooove growing up in Aberdeen!".
Anyone who knows a bit about Kurt knows how much he hated that place...

As far as the last thing, about Aberdeen - I thought that sounded funny too, knowing how tottured he was, but I tried to give her the benefit of doubt, in that the script of Kurt's childhood reads he was a very happy child until the divorce, which was reiterated in the film.

The stuff ajout him bouncing around, I agree, was awful, and the "it was tough on him, but what are you gonna do?" Attitude of the "adults" was definitely disturbing. As was taking him to the Dr and him immediate giving Ritalin. I've read where Courtney blamed what came later on this time in his life, this was the first time I ears it from his mother. An yeah, I'm not buying 100%, anyway, the stuff about "you are not ready for this".

reply

Agreed. I totally thought she was complete phony. Give me a break. Too bad her amazing psychic abilities didn't tip her off when he was young that she was setting him up for future emotional anguish and drug abuse.

reply

She said she knows now that she had to get together with Kurt's dad because Kurt had to be born. What a douchey thing to say. No wonder Kurt was so effed up.

reply

Cobain is a mega rock god icon and genius. His music begot a shift in rock music and will be with us forever. I think that's what she meant. If he wasn't born, we'd be without all that.

I'm not as sure about the history as you are but I stand by my statement that Kurt was a once Ina lifetime genius artist, pand therefore needed to be born. Of the bands you mentioned, he is clearly the best musician and frontman, no? And my belief is that the teen spirit video changed life. ask people about grunge and most will mention that vid.

reply

[deleted]

His persona was defined by him, through his music.

reply

[deleted]

Ok fair enough. But wouldn't we have all missed Bob Dylan if he were never born? Isnt that more important then whatever reason his mom chose his dad?

Jeff0015, I have a problem with your view of Cobain and I say this as a diehard fan of Cobain and Nirvana.

A little about me- I'm a few years younger than Cobain and grew up in Seattle. I was definitely part of the 'grunge' scene (we called it Punk or Waver, no one called themselves grunge but the media called us that). I saw him perform 3 or 4 times, along with a ton of other unknown bands.

I've always been intrigued by him, almost obsessed (in a good way), learning everything about his life, his inspiration, talents, etc. His music touched me a way most couldn't, as I too suffer from manic depression and had a bad childhood (mom abusive and dad a drug addict). I too was kicked out of the house by my manic mother and slept on the streets, fending off men that wanted to "take you home to a warm house". So in a way, I WAS just like Kurt.

Like him, I also play a few instruments and write. In my travels, though, I've found there are people just like him (and myself) all over the place, they're just not famous. When you call him a "Rock God" or put him up on a pedestal of idolatry, it just makes his suicide more clear. He couldn't handle it because of people like you. Putting so much pressure and expectations on a human being who was just banging out his feelings on a guitar.

He's been compared to Lennon, who also was a flawed human but put on a pedestal (ironically, worshiped because his life was also taken too early). If Paul McCartney had been killed, he'd be up there with Elvis. I thought about Marilyn Monroe and how she's on all these t-shirts, iconized in posters, movies, etc. If she were here as an 89 year old woman, would she be on all these popular media pieces? I don't believe so. Humans are romantic by nature and like to idolize other humans. If they die, we immortalize them as something higher to attain to or on such a high pedestal, they no longer are human.

Kurt had great ideas but so do many others. He raged against government, evils of corruption, etc but so many do this. He had a poet's heart but millions do too. It makes me think of an old man who mentored me as a young adult, he had a bluesy voice, wrote tender lyrics and had a deep well of wisdom about life. The only thing was he wasn't a drug addict, tortured soul or famous.

Please don't suggest there aren't "any like him". They're just trying to keep their head above water, working two jobs, paying for their house and keeping food in the fridge. It's not glamorous, so they'll never make the front page.

I can go on and on...But I'm kinda drunk and typing is kinda complicating right now,

BingoFlip20943 I also thought it was douchey when Kurt's Mom said she thought marriage was fun. And she got that out of the way she wanted a baby immediately. I can't remember the exact words but she did say she liked Kurt's Dad. And thought because she liked him it meant she loved him amd should get married. Sorry I don't remember the exact words but the whole statement was really douchey!

reply

"Aberdeen is a great place, kids loooove growing up in Aberdeen!"

When they cut to the footage of downtown Aberdeen, I thought "That place looks like a shít hole".

reply

Yeah I agree with most everybody who says that she was fulla crap. I SERIOUSLY doubt she ever had that conversation with Kurt.

reply

they even used it in the trailer. so melodramatic and corny. She is trying to insert herself into his legacy. She probably barely listened to it IRL

reply

exactly. That completely sounded BS. why would Kurt even do that. Why would he go to her house just to showcase his new album? He didn't even like her and now all of a sudden he storms to her house to listen to Nevermind.BS, complete BS.

reply

I didn't take it that she was saying she knew it would be super popular and make him rich... I think what she was saying was that this was more than some side thing he did (like all his other artistic endeavors) but now something very serious. I mean he wasn't making a demo tape he was there with the master recording (which seems somewhat doubtful, maybe a copy of the master) and this was going to be something a lot more serious than anything he had ever done before and probably indebted him to the label and other people. The responsibility to tour and whatnot would be more than just cleaning offices or whatever. Eyes would be on him. He was a kid that couldn't sit still. His GF that he lived with even said how he went from one thing to the other on a daily basis.

I'm not saying his Mom was right or wrong, but that's how I interpreted it. They really raked her over the coals as a bad Mom but yet it seems pretty true that he did keep going back to his mom through the years.

reply

She actually was saying it'd make him super popular. The quote comes from a conversation about her listening to Nevermind and knowing it'd be a hit and forever change his life. She was saying Kurt wasn't ready for that kind of fame.

Television is a vice; film is an addiction.

reply

and what kind of mother kicks her kid out, no matter how bad they r, and he was only nine at that time!

reply

That's what ran through my mind when I watched it and she said that. I immediately called BS on that
