Georges din't need a translator

In prison, George talked to the paki girl in english. She obviously understood and also answered him in english that she was suspected to be a spy.

But in the car, Georges weirdly asked a translator to explain to the girl she is "free to go".

I liked the movie but that scene didn't make much sense. Why asked an translation when he could already communicate with the girl.
