Fake reviews by days old members

It can't be good when people make phony profiles & post glowing reviews.

reply

True, it is not doing them any favours because now other people feel they have to give more negative scores to balance the fake ones out.
Mind you, can't blame them, I mean I would really like my mum to give me a great review when I make a film.

reply

The majority of people that scan over the friggin IMDB links ONLY look at the the review scores. THATS IT.

So in effect, their method works. Few actually look deeper into it, sadly.

Basically you can:

DEAL WITH IT!

You got any survey stats or other proof?
If not, stop commenting like an imbecile.

It's easier to check the photos, FAQ etc than actual reviews...

"First off. This is my first review. I've been an IMDb member since 2006, and the main reason (besides laziness) for not writing a review earlier, has been the language barrier. I'm Swedish, and my English vocabulary is somewhat limited."

Yes, yes surely xD At least people are legit on certain gaming sites, ie. GoG (not Steam) -- If you want to a be lamb, please be & believe the over over-the-top praise ;)

reply

Wait what? Don't you believe I'm Swedish or do I misunderstand?

Och då kan du väl använda dig av Google translate för att kolla den här texten, hehe. Men vänta nu! Jag kanske själv har använt mig av det för att skriva det här!

reply

Interesting. I thought it was a great wee movie, thoroughly original and full of surprises and twists. There you go, a glowing review but not a phony one.

reply

Yup. Totally agree. I even wrote my first review ever, not for the sake of trashing the movie, but for adding a balanced review.

reply

Good review, I added a yes to being helpful, I might just check it out now.

reply

Thanks for the review. I agree with you, the filmmaker reviews are toxic for imdb. At least the imdb I signed up for.

Hell, I can get you a toe by 3 o-clock this afternoon... with nail polish.

Before I invest a certain length of my time on earth in a movie, yes I read the reviews. And I check the star ratings, and the meta data along with external critics. An idiot who gives 10 stars to a waste of time is just thieving a portion of my time, and exhorting others to waste theirs.

It's pathetic, childish and a craven act to either say "look at me I was a bit extra", "this was filmed near my house" or "if I give it ten stars can I get more work ?"

If you can't give an honest review then why give one at all ? Why not have a six-month wait after joining before you can review ? Can't the imbeciles see it's counterproductive ?

It's almost as low as trolling. The more the fake reviews rave over the film, the more I check the data & read further, not only passing on the film, but letting anyone who asks know about the garbage reviews on the film. They also tend to be a fairly accurate indicator of a colossal waste of time; more fake reviews = a crap film not worth watching, ensuring it bombs at the box office and making an arse out of the fake reviewers.

Would you like your doctor to give you a fake review ? "Ten stars for the scan on your lungs, It's the most exciting thing I've seen in years and will revolutionise the industry. I was blown away by what I saw - you'll be talking about this one for years !!!" Another doctor looks at it & says "looks like a big growth of lung cancer to me, the first doctor wasted your precious time "....

Just another example of how plastic and fake certain people in the world have become. There was a time when someone's word could be relied upon, now it's rare and the notion of honesty has been cheapened.

I expect any number of halfwits to try & argue the point, but then again trying to teach a pig to sing always did waste your time & annoy the pig...

And yet as noble as you are (for sleuthing the evil doers), your ratings are off the charts polarizing. Without going into detail you rate 1/10 for The Departed..... That there should render any and all your ratings useless.

I don't expect users to have the same tastes in film (as me), and you being a veteran of this site should know better, but what exactly are you trying to accomplish? If a film like The Departed is 1/10 then may I rest in peace.

adrossan = Busted!

Nice investigative work squigee07, and after that ridiculous rant too.

reply

Hey adroidiot, you've just been exposed as a moron.

reply

Ditto.
I just signed up in IMDB, despite this being a recurrent site for me to check movie reviews since a long time ago, to say that this movie is pretty nice (despite the fake reviews that might mislead some).
It's not gonna to become THE movie, but it's entertaining and definitely worth watching.

reply

Fake or not this movie isn't all that bad! Some of the acting here and there wasn't that great, the worst offender being the British character; but overall I found the movie very entertaining and didn't feel I wasted my time watching it.

6/10

reply

Actually, I've seen it.

It is not that well executed but the idea seems interesting. There were many directions they could have taken it. In essence, is the Pandora's box, power that you can't control. With a high budget, a better script and maybe 30 minutes more, it would have been a great movie.

Of course, this can work if you leave aside the space - time errors from the movie. I hate it when they combine actual science with sci-fi / fantasy.

If you people are talking about carlburger's review, you can't have read it very carefully. It was hardly a "glowing" review. The gist of it was, "It wasn't great, it had a lot of problems, but for what it is, it's not bad." He isn't exactly raving about the film. Several other people on this forum said better things about the movie than this reviewer did.

Here's an excerpt:

The actors are OK. Some more annoying than others. The archetypes are all there. But hey. What fun is a room full of like minded people, right? So I'll let that one slide. The script is the weakest point. The movie is short, clocking in at roughly 1 hour and 20 minutes- but they were clearly struggling to fill that little time. The godawful "debate" about whether to take the pill or not, at the very beginning of the movie is a prime example of that.

So it's not aces. It's not groundbreaking. It's not even very original although it tries so hard to be. But. Was i bored watching it? Nope. It was OK for the duration. It was OK for what it was.

And then he gave it a 6/10.

The only thing I found odd was that carlburger said he'd never posted here before because his English was too poor, but then he went on to produce a perfectly articulate piece that showed a better grasp of the English language than many native speakers have.

reply

Woooot! I'm a swedish guy. English is my second language. I never feel comfortable writing in English and rely on spellcheck to make sure I don't misspell any words. Maybe it's a swedish thing. We really don't want to say anything until we're sure it's as grammatically correct as possible. But honestly, when I write, it often feels like I'm just making up English as I go along.

So, thank you for your comment on my English. :)

And back on topic: Yeah, the movie is no gem. I just wanted to give an honest review. Not trashing it just for the hell of it. Nor praising it like a studio exec on a bogus account. It was just OK. The studios are like propaganda agents when they praise their own films. I really and truly hate that. So, finally I got my thumb out of my arse and wrote a review. For a mediocre film. Fueled only by irritation that, standing among us movie fans, are studio agents, desperately trying to hype their product.

It fills you with the same sinking feeling as if a ceo of Mercedes would jump into the backseat of the car you're test driving and continously yell "ISN'T THIS CAR FANTASTIC?" for the duration of the drive. Come to think of it... Maybe that's what they do nowadays. But that's beside the point. The point is: Finding undercover agents amongst the reviewers is counterproductive. It doesn't fill us with high hopes. It screams lack of confidence in the movie. And they need to stop doing it.

Crap. It turned into a rant. Pardon the lengthy text.
