why do people dislike this show?

Okay I get the first episode was slow to start and people probably quit after that.

I get that Katey Sagal's accent sucks lol but I can look past that.

And I know sometimes it's kinda hard to follow at times but it still intrigues me.

I think it's actually a pretty good show with decent acting.

Why don't people like it??

Read the reviews. A bunch of people do an excellent job explaining why they don't like this show.

OP -- because different people have different opinions and values. Welcome to the world. You must be new here, yes?

This wasn't a rhetorical question nor am I stupid and don't realize people have differing opinions.

This is a discussion board meant to discuss the show. I was genuinely interested in what people dislike about the show. I just want to know what aspects of the show that people dislike.

There was no reason to be rude in your reply.

If you had phrased your post in that manner, I wouldn't have felt compelled to be so snarky.

I'm on a bit of a crusade to encourage all the nitwits here to leave.

I suppose my wording could have come off a little derisive to some. It wasn't my intent.

Moreover, I'm not one of those nitwits.

Anyways, keep up the crusade. I don't think anybody is fond of nitwits.

reply

I didn't take it as derisive. A little naive and simplistic, maybe.

...and I'm out! Not a nitwit, but sick and tired of you presumptuous know-it-all's who think their opinion matters more than anyone else's!
Have fun on your quest! Soon you and your kind can have all the boards to yourself and pat each other on the back on your victory!

There are a lot of reviews that explain it right here on the message board.

It doesn't help that Sutter is following the same ol' SOA formula. Just set in medieval times. Some will like the show for that and others won't.

I didn't dislike the 2-hour premier. I gave it a 7. That's usually what I give a show a I kind of like but not enough to keep watching.

As for the low overall grade, a lot of people's grading is just stupid. There's no way this deserves a 1 out of 10 but I guess if you give something a 1, it'll have more effect on the overall score than if you give it an honest and realistic score.

Some of my thoughts:

1) Main character was sort of interesting but there didn't seem to be anything special about him. At least not enough to get me hooked.

2) Story was a bit confusing. I couldn't tell what was going on at first.

3) Similar to #2, some of the accents were hard to understand. I wished there were some subtitles so I could follow along better.

4) The gore was a bit gratuitous. I don't mind realistic gore but they seemed to go over the top to cater to that audience.

5) They went out of their way to depict the nasty parts of life back then (like the guy wiping the lord's butt). It seemed more designed to shock then push the story forward.

6) The politics part of it was kinda fun. The class struggle, the connections to England, etc. I felt like the rulers were pretty stupid thinking they could raise taxes with no repercussions.

7) The Baroness was cool. I wanted to know more about her. She had an interesting relationship with the Baron's underling (Vampire Bill).

8) The healer woman (and her mute) was supposed to be the mystery part of this show but didn't really capture me. I think they wanted the twist at the end of the premier to serve as an "oh crap!" moment to bring people back for episode 2 but I had already figured it out before the reveal. I felt that if they couldn't hide that twist from me, the rest of the show might also be a bit predictable.

Overall, I thought it was a pretty decent start. I wasn't constantly looking at the clock even with a 2-hour run time. I guess I was hoping for more after all the advertisements and hype. If this came out a decade ago, I'd probably keep watching, but there's just so many good shows out there right now that I have to be a little more picky when I commit to a new one.

1) the acting sucks.
2) no chemistry
3) no humor
4) story line is a total mess
5) it's outright boring

I don't really understand why the rating is so low either. The show has definitely been picking up momentum. the plot so far is pretty interesting and they can go very far with it depending on which direction they go. This show is anything but boring. People just need to stop comparing this to Game of Thrones. Bastard is set in Wales, which is a real place. This is not supposed to be high fantasy and set on the fictional continents of Westeros, Essos, and Sothoryos. GoT is probably my favorite show on tv and I am also a big fan of George RR Martin's books. I have watched a lot of tv series. On imdb Sleepy Hollow the tv series has a 7.6 and although the first season was not half bad, it doesnt deserve the rating it has. IMDB really should wait until the first season of a show is over before allowing votes. Hopefully people will eventually realize that this show really does have potential.

Yeah looking forward to seeing what frenchie is going To do now. Also wondering what Brattles fake wife is going to do since she saw them holding each other.

I am shocked at some of the reviews as well...I think the show is excellent and different and good for television. It seems like everything on Primetime is the same drama crap. Its refreshing to see a different type of story. Some people just don't like change or different. It's the American Way!

I like it. The dialogue is well-written and the acting is very good as well. I love the Baroness character, little proto-feminist struggling to beat out all the skeezy powermonger dudes. And Vampire Bill is really menacing and cracked. It's done well, the backdrop of medieval Britain is to me always interesting. It's not Game of Thrones but it doesn't suck.
