I didn't dislike the 2-hour premier. I gave it a 7. That's usually what I give a show a I kind of like but not enough to keep watching.
As for the low overall grade, a lot of people's grading is just stupid. There's no way this deserves a 1 out of 10 but I guess if you give something a 1, it'll have more effect on the overall score than if you give it an honest and realistic score.
Some of my thoughts:
1) Main character was sort of interesting but there didn't seem to be anything special about him. At least not enough to get me hooked.
2) Story was a bit confusing. I couldn't tell what was going on at first.
3) Similar to #2, some of the accents were hard to understand. I wished there were some subtitles so I could follow along better.
4) The gore was a bit gratuitous. I don't mind realistic gore but they seemed to go over the top to cater to that audience.
5) They went out of their way to depict the nasty parts of life back then (like the guy wiping the lord's butt). It seemed more designed to shock then push the story forward.
6) The politics part of it was kinda fun. The class struggle, the connections to England, etc. I felt like the rulers were pretty stupid thinking they could raise taxes with no repercussions.
7) The Baroness was cool. I wanted to know more about her. She had an interesting relationship with the Baron's underling (Vampire Bill).
8) The healer woman (and her mute) was supposed to be the mystery part of this show but didn't really capture me. I think they wanted the twist at the end of the premier to serve as an "oh crap!" moment to bring people back for episode 2 but I had already figured it out before the reveal. I felt that if they couldn't hide that twist from me, the rest of the show might also be a bit predictable.
Overall, I thought it was a pretty decent start. I wasn't constantly looking at the clock even with a 2-hour run time. I guess I was hoping for more after all the advertisements and hype. If this came out a decade ago, I'd probably keep watching, but there's just so many good shows out there right now that I have to be a little more picky when I commit to a new one.
