Mixed Feelings

This show came off better than I expected it to be. As it's clearly going for it's own style, but it also clearly shows some odes as they should be. As a new experiment I think it's worthy of it's merit. I'm having flashbacks mixing to 2 Stupid Dogs, The Batman and HB's animated Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello. In terms of writing and then designs.

But that's sort of the mixed part for me. After dealing with the previous incarnation throw out most of what I liked, this is a welcome change. But in a way it feels a bit too modern. And while with most of what airs on Cartoon Network today, I like it, but I'm not particularly drawn to it. The Tom and Jerry Show already went this way for me.

If this is what we get on tv, I can live with that. As long as also get the dtv line I like better to keep going. But I can't help but feel this is a show I'll have no complaints watching when I come across it. But can't really seem to want to be following it for premieres and maybe one day buying on dvd if I happen to come across it.

I'm really conflicted. I don't know the various incarnations of the series as well as you do, oddark123, but my feelings are based entirely on MI, really. I have an 11yo, and he and I loved Mystery Incorporated. Like BELOVEDLY loved it. I was so taken with the serialized storyline, fleshed out characters, and completely intelligent storytelling. I'm a soap girl at heart, and to give these characters this depth brought so much. I didn't get so much out of the movies in and around that time, but they were ok.

For this incarnation I was so excited, but when i saw the animation, I joined the throng of horrified people. Dislike this kind of common CN animation. But I gave it a chance and heard immediately that Velma was no longer Mindy Cohn. WHY?! So annoyed.

Now, I've seen two episodes, and if I'm being fair, it's not bad. You're right, it's extremely funny. Completely amusing. The thing with the claw underwater was definitely brilliant. The summaries at the end and expositions at the beginning adorable and quite well-done. And in the interest of more fairness, Kate Miucci is doing great as Velma. She's got her down, and her casting is not her fault, no reason to vilify her.

But I do miss Mindy. There was nothing wrong with Mindy, and in fact, I think she's the best Velma that's ever been. Why on earth replace her? I also miss the characterizations and history established in MI. I don't mind bottle shows, that's fine. But the previous continuity would have been nice here and lent quite alot to each show. Finally ... yes, that animation. It's awful. The characters are so unattractive and goofy. The non-connected legs, the weird disproportion of head to body, huge feet, and the awful Stewie eyes. It's distracting. Hate.

No guest actors. Certainly saves money, but I always enjoyed seeing who was going to be showing up in Crystal Cove on MI.

So ... that's where I'm at. Writing good. Casting disappointing. Art direction heinous. Looking forward to Moon Monster Madness, maybe I'll get something back out of that. Or maybe not. I dunno.
