I don't think the movie explained but what did Mr Church actually die from?

The old "mysterious coughing" foreshadowing technique. A character who just starts randomly coughing for no reason almost always ends up dying. But guess it's yet another one of his secrets. Does it really matter? <shrug>

He died in 1986. AIDS epidemic around that time. Mr. Church, being gay, was probably exposed.

I also assumed lung cancer. He was a long time smoker and then had a bad cough that didn't go away.

The "real" Mr Church died in his sleep from diabetes.
