"London: United Kingdom" (So the Yanks know where it is)

Yes, I'm sure there are London's across the globe thanks to British settlers in the Americas and maybe other English-speaking nations. But, in films, seriously?

Whenever anyone mentions London several times before showing the city- especially with an aerial view of the English capital....???

reply

I've never heard of your obscure town. Surely it's named for London, Canada?

reply

The producers know very well how much they can expect from their audience

in America....nothing.

Remember: They made Trump a serious candidate for POTUS.

reply

to be fair they also showed Las Vegas Nevada.
I am British(from Scotland) and was in the USA a few weeks ago.(New York,Washington DC and Billings Montana)

When we said we were from Scotland or Britain some people said SEAN CONNERY or London ,other people knew Scotland and had even been there, one person said that is in europe right?
If we said we were from England they would say London and at least they had seen films set in London.
Saying British was usually a waste of time.

But for me the interesting thing was that they often had no curiosity about where we were from.

There are Londons in South Africa,Australia and Canada, and several Glasgows and Aberdeens in the USA and Canada,so showing London England does not bother or surprise me much.

I would like to think that showing a caption saying London England or Paris France would not be really required but maybe they are?

America is a huge and varied country,I don't sneer at Americans who don't own a passport or who have never travelled abroad but if they come to London or Edinburgh (my hometown) I hope they are welcomed as warmly as we were by most Americans we met.

So true...

Americans have little interest in any other countries, because they have this strange illusion, that they're the center of the universe & everything else
is of little importance.

Like you said, they often don't even know where other countries are.

Most Americans never travel to other countries.

Don't get me wrong I loved the country and my holiday but the I was surprised when someone asked me if we had scouts in Britain (they were invented by a Brit).

reply

I think there's a London in Kentucky. I saw that on a mile post sign once.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

Wow, the elitism in this thread (as well as the ignorance) is real. There IS a London, Ontario. Not to mention Londons in several US states. Please don't speak of things that you know nothing of.

reply

Yes we know London Ontario,if you google London Police you get London Ontario, which is crazy really.
London UK 8 million people.London Ontario?

Do most Americans/Canadians know that a lot of their place names are from the UK?

To be fair a lot of the comments on here were jokes or like mine actually against the anti Americanism which is too easy to fall into.

reply

I hear ya. It gets really tiring to see sometimes.
