Lazy screenplay, miscast, boring - just an uninspired remix - 3/10

Let me start by saying, that I don't mind the 'shaky cam'
and always liked Paul Greengrass' realist style.

The textures of his visuals feel more real than in other flicks.

But it's worthless, if you only have a daft screenplay,
that mostly recycles "The Bourne Supremacy",
which was the best of them...

But this is the worst.
It's so boring, I was really surprised.

The casting of Alicia Vikander was a big mistake.
Tommy Lee Jones is boring as a villain, because that's nothing new.

Bourne's motivation to get involved is very weak.

It's a non-stop chase-fight-scene without much substance.

It's pure "Bourne" formula, but feels like a parody at the same time.

I had to laugh sometimes about the stupidity of the bad writing,
where you see 'Encrypted' written on a USB-Stick...wow.

This movie should have never been made.

I agree. Way too much computer tracking, hacking and general convenient tech. People tracking one another through a rioting Greek city? Driving a car from the airport, through rioting streets to intercept someone on a motorcycle? Even with help from a satellite this is ridiculous. I'm all for suspension of disbelief, but this was just lazy writing.

Totally disagree. When you said the Bourne Supremacy was "the best of them"... lol

That was easily the weakest. Of course, that's just my opinion, and I think yours is wrong.

Ultimatum was the best of the series.

My raw opinion of this film, on its own merit, is 3 outta ten. But because of the severe insult to previous entries, and the mountain of should have known better, and the preposterous SWAT truck stunt, I can only levy this film the lowest of a 1 score. Boring as dirt, offensive and insulting, and abandoned of any realism in technology, policy or physics. This movie is a total failure.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

"Uninspired" is the key word that you use. The first three were razor-sharp, relentlessly paced, and a perfect balance of paranoid espionage thrillers with action. This movie is an outstanding representation of how dumbed down Hollywood movies have become in the near-decade since Ultimatum came out: A half-assed story and plot, one-dimensional characters, and big loud action scenes just for the sake of action.

I agree.

That said, I'm not a big fan of "Ultimatum", because it's obvious that they started
to repeat the "formula" then: They re-used most of the great soundtrack of "Supremacy"
and all the other stylistic innovations of that film.

But "Ultimatum" has a good script, a little bit inspired by the "Manchurian Candidate".
It was a good conclusion to the story:
Bourne remembered everything and knew everything.
Case solved.

There was nothing more to tell.

There was never a reason to continue this story.

Now they made a "patriot" out of Bourne...someone like Bruce Wayne, who lives in the shadows and will help the CIA in the future ?

This is a betrayal of the original character.

Bourne's motivation to get involved was beyond weak. It was a rather dull and terribly uninspiring movie, and if it didn't have Matt Damon and the Bourne character in it and it was some standalone movie people would be far less forgiving about it.

reply

Totally agree.

The rating will drop.

But it takes some time until the fan boys wake up...

They could have made it work but they just didn't put in the required effort. The plot and casting was poor and car chases have been done to death.Action scenes are better if they are done on foot ,with innovation and imagination, rather .than cars flying a million miles an hour the wrong way during a busy rush hour .Doesnt Holywood realize that ?I hope they don't make anymore

I think you have a great point - they went bigger, not smarter. For me, the Supremacy car chase with the taxi in the tunnel was absolutely epic because of how smart it seemed. I know it's mostly unrealistic to drive at high speeds and spin around into reverse and drive at the same speed because I don't think the reverse gear can go that fast (can be wrong of course - I just figure there's more than one "forward" gear for a reason). But still the way it was done - spinning to propel the other car into a pillar - seemed to take some thought to "outwit" the other guy. Smashing through cars in a traffic jam is just brute strength and not smart.

This movie let me down more than IDR or Batman V Superman. I knew those movies where going to suck going in to them. I actually thought this was going to be good. More pain in cases like this one.

fully agree, absolutely awful film that tried to make itself more interesting by switching between different cities constantly where the exact same thing kept repeating itself. yawn.
