Geographical surveys show year after year that people dont even know where major countries are, let alone cities.

lol i know but dang , i dont need some director telling me "london..... england" movie goers are pretty stupid though

reply

There is a London in Ontario. Just saying. But I agree the big name places like Rome, Paris, Washington etc don't really need more explanation.

reply

Sad and yet true. I was in an art class a few years ago to just take some photography classes. Anyway, the teacher put up a picture of the Eiffel Tower and nobody in the room (except me) knew what it was. I was flabbergasted and said so. The instructor responded, well not everyone has been there' to which I replied, I've never been to the moon, but I know it when I see it.

LOL!

American people.

reply

Americans dnt know where major countries are, everyone else is fine

the average American audience is the EXACT reason they have to name the country aswell as the city

reply

Precisely. Now I don’t think it’s a big deal myself, but for instance... even back in the good ol’ days when supposedly everyone and everything was better (let me hear you preach it, privileged boomers!!!), studio execs MADE a filmmaker like Kubrick include a voiceover narration in one of his films - in this case it was the straightforwardly plotted The Killing - because they worried audiences would have a hard time following the film. Yes, even back in them good ol’ pro- social injustice days studio execs knew they had to dumb things down for the average (uncultured) ‘Murican viewer, lol. And there are absolutely many
more examples of this in older films.

But nah, it’s these somewhat less regressive days that be dumb! Get off my lawn! No... now we’re generalizing and making unfair criticisms of the country that’s resembling Idiocracy more and more each and every day, let’s not be so anti-pc and say such things. XD

‘Murica!

It didn't really bother me, just like everyone knows Las Vegas is in Nevada. They actually didn't have a caption for Washington DC though many shows and movies DO do that.

The only time the kind of thing the OP mentioned really jumped out me, though, was how in the beginning of "Triple 9" the captions read "Atlanta, Georgia, United States".

reply

I agree, but for the sake of clarity I guess. While "Rome" means only one thing to most people, there are probably others more accustomed with other cities named Rome.
E.g.
Rome, Georgia.
Rome, Illinois.
Rome, Indiana.
Rome City, Indiana.
Rome, Iowa.
Rome, Kentucky.
Rome, Maine.
Rome, New York.

Someone from around any of those cities(who is not well educated) might think of those Romes before the Italian one.

reply

Well, these movies might be still getting watched a hundred years from now. It's best to spell things out.

reply

It doesn't bother me so much when like others have pointed out that more than a few cities in multiple states, in multiple countries in this day in age share the same name down to similar spelling.

Plus I like to see it as the filmmaker keeping the motif of a film about black-ops by being percise with locations.
