So, was Marcus... *MAJOR SPOILER*

Was Marcus actually real or just a figment of Olivia's imagination? The last scene, with the flowered wallpaper that looked so much like the flowers she brought to him in the hospital, made me think it was the latter.

Then again, they called her, "Mrs. Anderson," which made me think that she got out of the hospital after she left college, eventually married, and decades later ended up in a home when she was older.

Mental illness in a family wasn't discussed back in that day. So maybe she was put in the institution under an assumed name.

Just a thought.

That is a good point and a definite possibility.

Gosh, I never considered the possibility, until now, that Olivia was institutionalized at college age for the rest of her life. That would indeed have left her with strong memories of her emotional tie with Marcus.

Really? You didn't get that was an image she still had of when she was happy with Marcus? How do you get through the day?

I think he was obviously real, I don't think Olivia's perceptions of reality were ever really warped so bad that he could be a figment of her imagination; and it just doesn't make sense that he would be since the whole film is from his point of view. I found it kinda slow burning, but just utterly heartbreaking at the end. The message that despite the situations not being fully relatable, the actions having consequences felt so raw by the end. I found it so brilliant how near the end it seemed like everything was just beginning to start going well for him then the last few scenes were just phenomenal. I found it so fascinating how it all kinda seemed to fall apart for him from all people but Marcus' doting mother
