How I view this series (slight spoiler)

As a thought experiment as to how Europe, in the near-present context, would interact IF the USA was operating with a pre-WWII / isolationist mindset but including an ascendant expansionist modern Russia.

That is a somewhat absurd precondition, but it does allow an exploration of the fault-lines that do exist within Europe itself, would likely express under stressed conditions unconstrained by US military/diplomatic power.

What I enjoy especially are the situations a weaker but somewhat integrated European power would face under active measures by an adversary possessing overwhelming superiority. Where simple measures, such as muscle-flexing, are not on hand.

Season 3 is out now, which deals with reactions within a newly-liberated country, the repercussions, score-settling, scapegoating, political machinations built upon that platform.

I think its a great mind game. The soap-opera aspects don't swamp the drama, as is most often the case in other similarly-themed series. It's mainly domestic & geopolitics in this slightly-tweaked universe.

Yes the geopolitics of it all is why I enjoyed this series the most.

"IF the USA was operating with a pre-WWII / isolationist mindset but including an ascendant expansionist modern Russia ... That is a somewhat absurd precondition"

Is it really that absurd? Is it so far fetched to think if Trump wins re-election (god forbid) he could withdraw from NATO and retreat to isolationism? That could easily serve as catalyst for an ascendant Russia. I could easily see them rolling into reclaim Ukraine with the EU on its heels.

The trip was how far out there this idea was when this series began in 2015.

What was also interesting to me was watching Jesper Berg's transformation from climate champion to patsy Russian puppet to Machiavellian operator orchestrating the assassination of his former political acolyte back to prime minister to climate radical/fugitive.

I'm not sure I entirely buy the final metamorphosis, or at least I found it a bit rushed in the final episode. I think they could have added a few more episodes to the final season but were probably ordered by the suits to wrap it up in six seeing as how they took nearly 6 years to churn out 3 seasons.

It is a great and well thought out series. It is so plausible that I can scarcely believe anyone had the brains and talent to write this. It is not Russia being expansionist, it is Russia looking after its energy interests. This is a fascinating and very intellectual series, and I imagine there will not be a lot of fans because it is not your typical stupid Hollywood storyline. The acting, the characters, the plot ... all way above average.
