which bombed worse

Mortdecai or strange magic?

I know magic was in more theatres but did it cost as much to make and market?

reply

I am guessing Magic because of the costs of animation?

If I wasn't from Jamaica, then why would I be wearing this hat?

I say Mortdecai. Disney isn't really supporting Strange Magic. It just fell into their hands when they bought Star Wars. They didn't want it and dumped it in January with minimal advertizing. Mortdecai has had a ton of advertizing and even though it was expected to have a poor weekend, it was expected to do better than Strange Magic which it looks like it won't. I think the production budgets are about the same. Box Office Mojo estimates Mortdecai's at $60M. They don't have an estimate for Strange Magic, but I read somewhere it was around $55M.

I have a feeling Mordecai will do well overseas. The idea of a foreign guy discovering America's weirdness will probably attract a good few in the foreign markets. As for Strange Magic, although i can't find a confirmation of budget anywhere ($60m for Mordecai http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-preview-american-sniper-765687), I agree thats it's probably around $55-$60 million. I don't think it will do well anywhere because of the complete lack of marketing and non-catchy trailers. Combine that with the bad word of mouth from the people who do actually know about it, I think Strange Magic will end up being the film that does worse.

I am going to say Mortdecai because they at least tried to market it (although they failed miserably).

Well they both got beaten up by American Sniper and Paddington.
A sequel to Paddington is already being planned:
Paddington II: The Revenge
After his Aunt Lucy is killed by poachers, Paddington trains with an ex Royal Marine played by Sir Michael Caine and hunts the killers down in Darkest Peru.
