In the opening of the movie, they are apparently befriended by a local farmer who takes them to his place and offers them soup. As they are about to eat, one of the patriots suddenly starts and runs into the next room where he finds the farmer apparently about to phone the Nazis. What tipped the patriot to the farmer's duplicity?

Maybe it is just the fact the older man left the room. Why would he leave the room when he was feeding two strangers? Maybe the logical thing would have been for a true Czech loyalist to stay and talk to them, ask them questions. Remember, it is a true story. Maybe it was just intuition.

What everyone else said AND the fact that he closed the door. Also, even if they were only 50% suspicious they could have apologized if they were wrong -- but they weren't. Good call on their part.
