What city is this meant to be? Where is it actually filmed?

I have been watching this show since the first episode, but I can not figure out where it is meant to take place. It feels very Canadian (in location) to me. Someone mentioned that it was filmed in Chicago, another NYC (I am a New Yorker, and it definitely isn't here). Does anyone know? A few episodes ago, when Josh dated the car, there was a license plate, but I couldn't make out the state name on it. This has been annoying me from the start. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance.

I found that it is filmed it Toronto, Ontario, Canada. But it is meant to take place in America. It seems like it could be a mix of a bunch of Northern states on the West and East coasts, or even Michigan. Does anyone know where it is meant to be, or is it supposed to be vague on that part.

It's meant to take place in Chicago, IL.

I never understand why they do this. Either film it in Chicago or say it's Toronto. I already seen the subway seen. Clearly a TTC subway smh

When do they say it's meant to take place in Chicago? As far as I can tell it's pretty nondescript. It seems to me that they wanted it to be universal so they made a point of never assigning a particular city.

It's definitely not supposed to be nondescript or ambiguous. They've made it clear that the show takes place in Chicago. They have used the Chicago skyline multiple times, shown the CTA trains and specific stops, and referenced certain Chicago streets, neighborhoods, suburbs, etc.

That's what should be done but in a world where everyone is trying to save a buck they will look for ways to save money. There are cities that offer tax subsidies if film/TV is produced there. Some places offer as much as 25% off what it would normally cost. There has been a trend for this work to be in Canada in the last few decades. I do think they could have solved a lot of issues if they just said it takes place in Toronto but I suppose it's an American show so they want it to actually take place there for the setting. It's super goofy. Jay Baruchel is actually Canadian anyway and he lives in Toronto I think.

The episode (I believe Season 2 episode 8) that showed the police cars, they had Chicago PD on them.
