Do I need to see the movies to get the series?

Was wondering if I have to see the movies before the series to get it.

reply

Strangely, not. It's pretty self-contained. There are several flashbacks too.

Anyway, the trilogy is a masterpiece, you should.

I'd watch the movies first if you haven't seen them yet. It'd probably make the show a little more enjoyable.

reply

Yeah, there's some flashbacks and things that reference the films. I'd check out the movies first to fully get it.

reply

it's NOT self contained
you MUST watch the movies first
and WHY would you not want to?!?!

THANK YOU!

Ash vs. Evil Dead is the third nostalgic experience of 2016 along with Stranger Things and PokemonGO. It is literally everything the fans of the original could ever ask for. Fits extremely well into the timeline. Makes a perfect fourth installment to the series and is exactly what the Evil Dead fans needed. Watching the Evil Dead trilogy over and over again over the decades is tiring, it was time for a new series and it happened to contain so much they had to make it into a show (I would have been fine with a two part epic with run times up to 160 minutes each)and I'm actually really glad they did.
Ash's character in the show is exactly what he would have become after what he's been through. The show is amazing, the entire franchise is fantastic, and I am really looking forward to season 2. Also, it did bother me in the beginning that AoD was not mentioned, but that's literally how both of the movie sequels went, they had to avoid mentioning previous movies and it works perfect for season 1 and I am very happy to hear they can now reference AoD in Season 2.
Yes, OP... watch the first 3 movies before you watch the series. It is definitely needed, why should it even be a question. Do you not want to see one of the greatest, funniest, and badass characters go through their transformation to find out why they are the way they are for the show?

Thank you.

Yes, it is self-contained.

The premise is indeed pretty self-contained, and you don't at all have to see the movies beforehand, but you absolutely should. If it's a time concern I would try the pilot and then the movies. (Well I would actually save ED1 for later and do ED2, AoD, and then the pilot but that's less helpful)

It probably would make sense without seeing the films but why on Earth wouldn't you want to start at the beginning?

As much as I love this show, the films are (for the most part) better and they essentially amount to the first 3 episodes of the show (they just happen to be feature-length episodes).

Not to mention that a fair few gags and awesome moments in the series are references to the original trilogy.

Not really, but it certainly helps get the feel of what to expect.

And everybody should see the movies. Just because they're great.

reply

I suggest you watch the first movie, the series is a direct sequel. It is however closer in tone to the second and third movie.

reply

It's a direct sequel to Army of Darkness.

It works as a direct sequel to both Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II.

The only one that it's not a direct sequel to is The Evil Dead. (Plenty of specific references are made to the second film, not to mention things like Ash having a chainsaw for a hand).

Exactly. It is a direct sequel to both Army of Darkness and Evil Dead II. The atmosphere is straight from Army of Darkness. But much of what is referenced comes from Evil Dead II.

You can watch the series without seeing the films. But it would be a lot more enjoyable if you watched them. And I would definitely watch both Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. You don't have to watch Evil dead I if you don't want to as Evil Dead II is basically just a reboot of Evil Dead I and stands alone. There is a big argument about whether it is a remake or just a sequel. No matter which camp you are in you can easily just watch Evil Dead II and be fine.

There's no point in watching the series if you don't want to watch the movies
because they movies are so much better

reply

I suggest you watch the first movie, the series is a direct sequel.

Incorrect. It's a direct sequel to the second film.

reply

No it's not you retard. And it's not self contained. There are no opening credits either.
Ash has Friends. Multiple. First movie is the most canon. Also he goes back in time as well. All 3 are canon.
