Gervais is great at writing stand-up. Not so at writing films

His stand-up shows are fantastic as well as his Golden Globes presentations. His 3 movies (Cemetery Junction, The Invention of Lying and Special Correspondents) are boring and the jokes fall flat... even awkwardly. He might need to team up with Merchant again!

Extras is solid, though.

Extras was great but he did that with Merchant.

reply

That was my point! Extras was great indeed but co-written and co-produced with Stephen Merchant.

His stand-up shows aren't great either. One of them I watched, can't remember which, one of the later ones, was just him going on about how rich he was. Sure, he'd argue he's being "ironic" or something. But he just came across as a *beep*

i thought politics was good, anythng after that not so much.

He definitely needs Merchant. His stand up is ok, but the stuff they've done together, and podcasts with Karl are, for my money, some of the funniest comedy ever created. His solo stuff (especially film) is pretty bad.

Gervais is better at delivery, but I think Merchant (evidenced by his own standup and Hello Ladies) is the far better writer of the two.

The Invention Of Lying is a brilliant film.
But maybe you're a Christian which would explain why you think it's boring.
But to fellow atheists it's a very clever and original film.
I also think Ghist Town is a cute little film.
Didn't love Special Correspondents though...

I agree that Invention of Lying was brilliant. Ghost town was cute, but I also enjoyed this film. My only problem with SC was the ending felt a bit rushed.

I liked Ghost Town and The Invention of Lying. This one was okay but seemed to lack a bit of energy or something.

I choose to believe what I was programmed to believe
