Why indeed is Ricky Gervais credited for writing this film?

The whole story is based on the 2009 French movie Envoyés très spéciaux, and even has a lead role named Frank Bonneville.

Envoyés très spéciaux is credited as "based on" in end credits.

Perhaps the listing in credits should have been designated as "Script translated from the French film "Envoyés Très Spéciaux"
by Ricky Gervais"?
