Why Africa? (spoiler)

1, 3, 4 and the serie were all in Perfection Valley.

2 had a good reason, graboids appeared on a petroleo camp and the company needed help.

Now I see no reason why to go to Africa. And not just the place, the whole movie runs around a documentary crew. Butt was making one about hunting and his son will be the camera now.

I feel like South Africa government paid the production of the movie just to have a movie with graboids in there and bring tourists.

Odd

Maybe the writers were influenced by Africa....since some would say that it is part of The Cradle of Civilization? Something along the lines of all life began here....the Graboids are the oldest creatures on Earth....and here at the source....they are bigger and more developed?

[Never trust anyone that posts on only one IMDB board.]

Bigger and more developed...yea...like the lady doctor's boobs.

Different locale/location/set up. Honestly, if you watch the movie it's actually pretty good/cool and makes sense.

reply

lol I didn't say it's not good.

It's odd how Africa is a major element in the movie. How they talk about be running when the sun rises on Africa, how we have south african actors working on the movie, and so on. I had a big feeling of "come to Africa, it's cool!"

Perfection Valley is the fictional place where it all began and happened. The oil company made some little sense, because they work on the ground and could "awake" graboids.

But why Africa? There was no explanation for why it would happen there and not some other place.

And the monters had short time appearance. Most of the movie was about characters developing. That's odd for me. Tremors 1 had them developing most of the time over houses and rocks with graboids always below. In Tremors 5, they appeared and quickly were handled or just left.

My guess is so we could be introduced to the new subspecies. The African variety.

reply

I don't think that would be a reason. It's more like something created just to add new info.

Still, the new race could be anywhere.

Everything is bigger in Africa! Monsters and boobs!

South Africa - like many counties - offers subsidies to filmmakers who meet certain criteria (size of production, not artistic merit based). The market for Tremors films is niche at best, so government subsidies, clever production scheduling (keep the stars on set for as few days as possible), favorable exchange rates, and non-union below the line crews, are pretty much the only way it was ever going to happen.

They could have shot in South Africa and pretended it was the USA, but that could potentially make set design more expensive and limit acceptable locations for outdoor shoots. So, the filmmakers chose to lean into the 'problem' of shooting in South Africa and make it an asset instead of a liability.

I haven't seen this movie yet, but it looks like it might be decent, good even. I think it was smart to use the South African location as a part of the actual plot. It also signals potential viewers that this is a new starting point for a potential franchise relaunch.

Presumably, the idea is to make a Tremors 6 and potentially transition the series into a starring vehicle for Jamie Kennedy in part 7-and-beyond. That's smart too. Jamie Kennedy is in exactly the level of 'kinda-famous' to headline an ailing franchise like this. Not too big so as to prevent future sequels because of salary demands, but still a recognizable face playing against the 'type' that make him kinda-famous. It echoes the casting of Burt in the original.

Well, that ensures the horror part.

I don't know the exact details but apparently Africa and Nevada/the Americas were both once close to the continent of Columbia. If they knew this then it would make sense. Divergent evolution would then take care of the different look of the Ass- Blaster as well as the grabber which I consider the replacement for the Shrieker in this life- cycle.

Slightly different breed, would mean going to a different continent.
Plus with 4 films all pretty much in the same place it was refreshing to find a new location. Maybe they'll go down under next.
